Chương 14 - The Ethan ContingencyThe file was about Ethan.

Not hurting him.
Discrediting him.
Mark and Diane had prepared for the possibility that Ethan discovered the fraud.
They collected:
His travel schedule.
Photos of him drinking at client dinners.
Hotel receipts.
Emails sent after midnight.
A prescription for anxiety medication from three years earlier.
All ordinary.
All capable of being framed as instability if arranged carefully.
Then came the draft narrative.
Father absent due to work addiction.
Possible substance misuse.
Emotionally unavailable after spouse’s death.
Child requires stable maternal figure.
Maternal figure:
Diane.
Ethan stared.
“They were building a custody story.”
Monica nodded.
“Backup strategy.”
The scheme worked because every fact had a small truth inside it.
He did travel too much.
He had taken anxiety medication.
He did struggle after Rachel died.
Manipulation often does not invent reality.
It edits it.
Then Harris found a note from Mark:
If E.C. pushes back, use school attendance and missed pickups.
Ethan remembered two missed pickups.
Both times Diane volunteered to get Lily.
Then later complained he was unreliable.
He had thanked her.
The net had been built from favors.
Then Lily’s school called.
She had gotten into a fight.
Ethan arrived expecting tears.
Instead Lily sat outside the principal’s office, furious.
“What happened?”
“A boy said Mommy was crazy.”
Ethan’s heart broke.
“Did you hit him?”
“No.”
Relief.
“I pushed his books off the desk.”
Not great.
Better.
The principal explained another parent had discussed the case near children.
Rumors spread.
Lily looked at Ethan.
“Was Mommy crazy?”
There it was.
The question everyone else had planted.
Ethan knelt.
“No.”
“Was she sick?”
“Yes.”
“Did medicine make her forget things?”
“Sometimes.”
“Was she wrong about everything?”
“No.”
Lily nodded slowly.
Then asked:
“Can someone be sick and still be right?”
Ethan swallowed.
“Yes.”
May you like
“Then why didn’t anybody listen?”
He had no answer that would make childhood fair.
