Chương 13 - Ethan’s Forged LetterThe forged letter sounded like him.

That was the frightening part.
Diane knew his phrases.
His tone.
Even how he signed emails.
I’m grateful Diane has stepped in during an impossible season.
True.
I trust her judgment with Lily.
He had once said something similar aloud.
She turned it into paper.
The signature was digital.
Copied from a company document.
Mark submitted it.
The co-trustee application failed because Monica challenged it.
Ethan never knew.
Rachel had hired Monica privately before she died.
Another protection he had not understood.
Monica said:
“She didn’t want to burden you until she had proof.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Everyone protected me into ignorance.”
Monica nodded.
“Rachel wrote about that too.”
She showed him an email.
I keep waiting to have a perfect case before I tell Ethan. I’m starting to think that’s a mistake.
Rachel had learned it too late.
So had he.
He called his company the next morning.
Not to resign.
To change.
He stepped down from a major travel-heavy account.
His boss asked:
“Temporary?”
“No.”
“You’ve built this client for six years.”
“I know.”
“You’re walking away?”
“I’m walking toward something.”
Then Diane requested a supervised conversation with Ethan.
He agreed only through attorneys.
She appeared smaller.
Tired.
No makeup.
No performance.
“I was angry at Rachel.”
Ethan waited.
“She had you. The house. Lily. Everything.”
“This is about jealousy?”
“No.”
Diane shook her head.
“It became about control.”
She admitted she resented Rachel’s influence over family finances.
When Rachel got sick, Diane believed she could finally “fix” the household.
Then every boundary felt like rejection.
Every correction felt like humiliation.
She justified more.
Took more.
Controlled more.
Ethan asked:
“Why Lily?”
Diane cried.
“Because she reminded me of Rachel.”
There it was.
The ugliest truth.
Lily had become a substitute target for anger at a dying woman.
Ethan stood.
Conversation over.
Diane called after him.
“I loved her.”
Ethan turned.
“Then you should have acted like it.”
Outside, Harris was waiting.
He had one more update.
Mark had agreed to surrender every remaining document.
Including a sealed file Rachel never found.
