Chương 18 - The Blue Recipe BookMargaret brought the binder over that night.

She looked horrified.

“I took it because it had Rachel’s handwriting. I thought it was recipes.”

It was.

Mostly.

Chicken soup.

Banana bread.

Lily’s favorite mac and cheese.

Then, between recipes, Rachel had written notes.

Not evidence for court.

Evidence for herself.

April 2 — Lily hid crackers again.

April 5 — Diane told her dessert is for “good girls.”

April 8 — Ethan in Houston. Need to talk when he’s home.

April 11 — Mark called about trust “cleanup.” Why?

April 14 — Lily asked if I was dying because she was difficult. I have never been angrier.

Ethan stopped.

Lily leaned against him.

Then one final entry.

April 16 — Talked to Ethan. He looked exhausted. I lost my nerve and told him it could wait.

Ethan stared.

He remembered that night.

Rachel had said:

“Can we talk?”

He answered:

“Can it wait until Saturday?”

She smiled.

“Sure.”

Saturday became hospitalization.

Then decline.

Then no more chances.

Ethan pressed his hand to his mouth.

Margaret whispered:

“She didn’t blame you.”

“I know.”

That did not erase regret.

It gave regret shape.

Then Lily pointed to a recipe page.

At the bottom, Rachel wrote:

When Lily is scared, she asks whether Daddy will be home before sunset.

That was not random.

It had happened before.

Rachel had seen the pattern.

Diane became harsher in the evenings when Ethan was away.

Sunset had become Lily’s private deadline for safety.

Ethan finally understood the video completely.

Lily was not asking for a time.

She was asking whether the dangerous part of the day was almost over.

That realization hurt more than any financial theft.

Then Lily took a pen.

Under Rachel’s last note, she wrote in careful letters:

Daddy comes home earlier now.

Ethan had to leave the room for a minute.

May you like

When he returned, Lily was adding another line.

And I don’t hide snacks anymore.
