Chapter 1 - The Wrong Person

He slapped the woman who had just saved his baby.
And the only person brave enough to stop him was his sixteen-year-old daughter.
"SHE PUSHED THE STROLLER!" Vanessa screamed as Adrian Mercer rushed into the foyer. "Clara tried to send Emma down the stairs!"
The stroller lay twisted below the landing. Ten-month-old Emma was crying against Clara's chest. A broken flowerpot had scattered dirt across the marble.
"Adrian, listen to me," Clara said. "Your sister pushed it. I caught Emma before the stroller went over."
"Give me my daughter."
"She's shaking. Let me hold her a second."
He took Emma from Clara and passed her to Vanessa. Then he struck Clara across the cheek.
The sound made everyone stop breathing.
Clara stumbled against the console table. One hand went to her face. The other reached for the baby who was no longer in her arms.
"I was saving her," she said.
"Stop lying."
"Dad."
Olivia stood at the foot of the stairs, her phone gripped so tightly her knuckles looked white.
"Not now," Adrian said.
"You hit the wrong person."
Vanessa stepped toward her. "Sweetheart, you don't understand what happened."
"I was standing upstairs. I saw you."
Olivia opened the saved hallway security clip on the television. On the screen, Vanessa looked over her shoulder, put both hands on the stroller, and pushed it toward the open stairwell. Clara lunged from the hall, grabbing Emma just as the front wheels dropped.
There was no confusion. No missing angle. No possible mistake.
Adrian stared at the television, then at Clara's swelling cheek.
"Clara..."
She backed away. "Don't touch me."
Vanessa had gone very still.
Olivia pressed pause and looked at her father.
"That's the video from today," she said. "But it's not the worst thing I recorded."

She opened a second file.
On the screen, Vanessa's voice said, "After he turns against Clara, nobody will look at the money."
