Chapter 13 - The Signature He Almost Gave

Adrian remembered that form.

Vanessa had sent it the afternoon before the staircase. She called it a precaution in case Clara needed "a few days of rest."

He had almost signed without opening the attachment.

"You were about to give her authority over Emma," Celia told him in a meeting arranged through attorneys.

"I didn't know what was in it."

"That is the problem, Adrian. You keep saying you didn't know as though nobody tried to tell you."

Clara sat across the table. The mark on her face had faded, but the distance between them had not.

"I told you she was collecting stories about me," Clara said. "You said I was making your sister uncomfortable."

"I remember."

"I told you the baby monitor had been moved. You told me to stop being suspicious."

"I remember that too."

"And when I said she pushed the stroller, you hit me."

He looked down. "Yes."

Celia kept the meeting focused on documents. It was not a reconciliation session. Adrian agreed to provide the unsigned form, preserve his devices, and communicate only through counsel concerning Emma.

Before they left, he said, "I won't ask you to come home. I haven't earned the right to ask you for anything."

Clara paused. "You don't earn a right to me. You decide whether to become a safe father. Those are different things."

Adrian went home and wrote a complete account for investigators, including each warning he had ignored. He also gave them the old email in which he had called Clara "paranoid" for requesting bank records.

That night Helen called from the foundation board.

"The auditor found the first fraudulent approval," she said. "It predates Emma's birth."

"How far back?"

"Six years. Before you and Clara met."

The authorization carried the name of his first wife, Nora.

Nora had already been dead for two months.
