Chapter 14 - Nora's Name

Olivia was nine when her mother died. She remembered the hospital's blue blankets, the smell of oranges in Nora's purse, and Vanessa telling her to be strong for her father.

She did not know Vanessa had used Nora's name after the funeral.

The auditor found a forged approval for a small contractor payment, followed by larger transfers routed through successive companies. The pattern had grown slowly enough to hide inside ordinary spending.

"She practiced on Nora's reputation," Adrian said, barely able to get the words out.

Helen corrected him gently. "Someone used those records. We still have to prove who."

A comparison of the old approvals showed copied signatures and repeated formatting errors. Investigators traced the earliest digital files to a computer Vanessa had used as foundation administrator. Evan's invoices began the following year.

Adrian asked whether he should tell Olivia.

"Tell her what is confirmed," Celia advised. "Don't give her a theory and call it the truth."

He met Olivia at a supervised family-services office. A counselor remained nearby at Olivia's request.

"Your mother's name was used on documents after she died," Adrian said. "We're trying to find out who was responsible."

Olivia stared at her hands. "Vanessa told me Mom left bills we had to pay back. She said I owed her for keeping us afloat."

"You didn't owe her anything."

"I signed the Christmas papers because she said it would settle Mom's debt."

Adrian leaned forward, then stopped when Olivia pulled back.

"I'm sorry I let her tell you that."

Olivia wiped her face. "She didn't just trick you. She made me ashamed of Mom."

Later, Ruiz called with the results of the archived phone extraction. A deleted voice memo had been recovered from Vanessa's device.

It began with Evan saying, "If Nora's old signature gets questioned, put it on the girl."

Vanessa answered, "Olivia will believe whatever I tell her about her mother."
