Chapter 4 - A Petition Before the Accident

Clara studied the frozen frame on Olivia's phone.

"Why would Vanessa have a custody petition?"

"It had your name on it," Olivia said. "I zoomed in later."

A lawyer at the hospital's family advocacy desk explained that a draft petition did not grant anyone custody. It did show someone had prepared an accusation before the incident supposedly occurred.

Clara swallowed. "She planned it."

"We need the original document," the lawyer said. "Don't confront her or try to take anything. Give investigators what you have."

Emma's X-rays showed no fracture. The pediatrician wanted observation overnight, but her breathing, movement, and neurological exam were reassuring. Clara cried when she heard that.

Olivia put her arm around her. "You got to her in time."

"I almost didn't."

"But you did."

Across town, Adrian sat in an interview room with Officer Ruiz. He described his sister's accusations and the slap. His lawyer, called afterward, told him the truth was not a defense for striking Clara.

"I'm not asking for one," Adrian said.

Ruiz placed two printouts on the table. One showed the stroller moving. The other was a screen capture of Vanessa's prepared petition.

"Your sister wrote that Clara endangered the baby through violent negligence," Ruiz said. "Four days before the fall."

Adrian stared at the dates. "Why would she need custody of Emma?"

"That is one of several questions."

His phone vibrated with an alert from Mercer Holdings. Someone had attempted to authorize a payment of $246,000 to a contractor called North Bridge Maintenance.

Adrian called the company's controller. "Freeze it. Nobody gets paid until I say so."

"Sir," the controller replied, "that payment was approved under your login."

"I haven't logged in all day."

The controller lowered his voice.

"Then you need to see the other eleven transfers."
