Chapter 11 - The Bookkeeper's Son

The woman on the phone was Daphne Wells, a former accounts clerk for Evan Kline. She would not give Clara an address, and Celia refused to promise protection she could not provide.
"I can arrange for you to speak with investigators and ask about witness safety," Celia said. "What happened?"
Daphne took a shaky breath. "I found two sets of invoices. One described repairs that never happened. The other showed money going to Marshlight Partners."
"Why didn't you report it?"
"Evan knew my son needed treatment our insurance barely covered. He said he'd make sure I lost my job and coverage. Then he sent me photos of my boy walking home from school."
Clara glanced at Emma asleep in her portable crib.
"I'm sorry," she said.
"Sorry won't protect him. Evidence might."
Daphne had kept copies of three payment instructions and an email telling her to replace a trustee's name on an older approval sheet. She agreed to speak directly with financial investigators if they would discuss her son's safety first.
Detective Ruiz arranged the interview through the proper channels. Daphne also explained why Vanessa had been desperate to get Clara out of the house.
"Clara asked for receipts," Daphne said. "She was the only one who wouldn't accept summaries. Evan said if she got into the records, the whole sale would collapse."
"Did Evan tell Vanessa to hurt the baby?" Ruiz asked.
"No," Daphne answered. "I never heard that. I'm not going to claim what I don't know."
It was the first piece of testimony in days that did not sound rehearsed.
Late that night, Ruiz called Celia with a warning. Someone had used Daphne's old credentials to access the company archive after her interview was scheduled.
