Chapter 15 - The Door He Left Open

Adrian listened to the recovered memo in his lawyer's office. Then he asked the lawyer to play it again.
"Stop," he said halfway through the second time. "I understand."
But understanding did not repair anything.
The foundation board suspended Vanessa's administrative access and removed her from its management role while the criminal investigation continued. Evan's company was barred from further work, and an independent contractor began emergency repairs at Harbor House.
The city granted a limited extension after inspectors confirmed a funded safety plan. Eighteen families could remain while repairs proceeded, though nobody pretended the crisis had ended.
Adrian offered the foundation an unconditional loan to cover immediate costs. Helen insisted on independent review and a written agreement preventing him from controlling the audit.
"Agreed," he said.
At home, he could not sleep. He kept hearing Clara's voice: You don't earn a right to me.
His attorney had already explained the criminal consequences of hitting her. Adrian agreed to cooperate and began a certified intervention program before the case reached court. He told no one that attending sessions made him a good man.
In one session, a counselor asked what he had felt when Vanessa accused Clara.
"Afraid for my baby," he said.
"And then?"
"Angry that Clara wasn't who I wanted her to be."
"What did you choose to do?"
"I hit her."
He wanted to add that he had been manipulated, that his sister had lied, that he had seen a wrecked stroller. He didn't.
The next morning his lawyer forwarded a message from Vanessa's lawyer requesting a private settlement discussion.
Vanessa offered to help recover the stolen money if Adrian stopped cooperating against her.
