Chapter 3 - The First Honest Statement

The police arrived before anyone could leave.
Officer Maya Ruiz separated the adults and asked who had touched whom. Adrian could have softened the story. Instead he said, "I hit my wife. My sister pushed the stroller. My daughter has proof."
Vanessa laughed sharply. "Now you've decided to confess to everything?"
"Only what I did," he answered. "And what I saw."
Clara showed Ruiz the threatening text. Olivia handed over the original video files and the dates they had been created. A paramedic checked Emma in the ambulance. The baby had a small bruise near her elbow and needed a full examination.
"Will she be okay?" Olivia asked.
"We're taking her to the emergency department to be sure," the paramedic said.
Adrian approached the ambulance. Clara held up her hand.
"Please don't come near us."
"I need to know she's safe."
"Then let the doctors do their work."
Ruiz asked Vanessa to come to the station for questioning. Vanessa requested a lawyer. She did not look at Emma as the ambulance doors closed.
Olivia climbed into the ambulance beside Clara.
"You don't have to go," Clara whispered.
"Yes, I do."
"Your dad will be worried."
Olivia watched him standing alone beneath the porch light. "He can call me."
At the hospital, a nurse photographed Clara's facial injury with her consent. Clara told the attending physician exactly what happened. No invented details. No excuses for anyone.
When Adrian called, Olivia answered.
"How is Emma?"
"They're checking her arm."
"Tell Clara I'm sorry."
"You can tell her when she's ready to hear it."
There was a long silence.
Then Olivia said, "Dad, I started recording because I heard Aunt Vanessa say she could make Clara disappear without leaving the house."
"What does that mean?"
"I didn't know. That's why I kept the camera on."

She scrolled to another video and felt her stomach turn. The date was four days earlier. Vanessa was placing a folder inside Clara's desk.
On its cover were three words: EMERGENCY CUSTODY PETITION.
