Chapter 18 - The Answer He Owed Her

"I don't know," Adrian finally told Olivia. "I want to say I would have. But that isn't what I showed you."
Olivia looked away. "That's the first answer from you that feels real."
He wanted to hug her. Instead he asked whether she wanted him to leave.
"Not yet," she said. "Just don't explain it away."
He stood beside her while people passed through the corridor. For the first time in months they managed a conversation without Vanessa standing between them, even in memory.
At Harbor House, work crews replaced damaged wiring, fixed the elevator, and repaired the roof under independent supervision. Residents attended weekly meetings with the board and could see the invoices themselves.
Clara volunteered to help design a safer playground, but she refused a paid position that might tie her future to Adrian's company. She had started looking for work at an unrelated architecture firm.
"You don't have to prove you're independent every minute," Beth told her.
"I'm not proving it," Clara said. "I'm rebuilding it."
The foundation's lawyers blocked the proposed sale while the forged approvals and disputed liens were examined. A bank agreed to pause enforcement of the contested loan terms. None of that restored the missing money overnight, but it kept the residents housed.
As the criminal case moved forward, Vanessa's attorney opened plea discussions. Evan's records linked her to the fraudulent transfers, and the stroller footage had been authenticated from original files.
Adrian's own assault case also reached a decision. He accepted responsibility, pleaded guilty to the charge against him, and was sentenced under a court-supervised program with consequences and restrictions he had to meet.
He did not ask Clara to praise him for complying.
One evening Olivia called him from Beth's porch.
"Emma said a new word today."
"What was it?"
"No. Clara says she's becoming very opinionated."
He laughed once, then stopped.

"Good," he said. "I hope she grows up knowing that no is enough."
Olivia was silent, then said, "Dad, Clara filed for divorce."
