Chapter 5 - The Missing Money

By morning, Adrian knew that $1.18 million had left the Harbor House project account over eighteen months.
The invoices described roof repairs, elevator parts, and emergency plumbing at a building his late first wife, Nora, had helped turn into affordable apartments for single-parent families.
The work had not been done.
"Our residents are still waiting for those repairs," the controller, Priya Shah, told him. "Clara asked about the invoices last month. Vanessa said Clara didn't understand construction billing."
Adrian rubbed his eyes. He remembered dismissing Clara at dinner.
"Vanessa has handled this for years," he had said. "Stop making her feel like a criminal."
Now he opened one invoice after another. They carried electronic approvals issued from his account during times he had been out of the office.
"Who had access?" he asked.
"You. Me. Vanessa, through a delegated administrator profile. Evan Kline could submit bills but not approve them."
"Preserve everything. No deletions."
Priya hesitated. "There's another problem. Harbor House must show proof of repairs before next month's city review. We could lose the occupancy extension."
Eighteen families lived there, most with children. Adrian pictured the little playground his wife Nora had insisted on building behind it.
At the hospital, Clara listened as her attorney, Celia Hart, reviewed options for a temporary protective order and immediate custody arrangements. Clara requested that Adrian have no unsupervised contact with Emma until a court evaluated the violence.
"Are you certain?" Celia asked.
"I saw him hit me while our baby cried. I'm certain she needs safety."
Olivia sat beside her, picking at the sleeve of her sweatshirt.
"What about me?" she asked. "Can I stay with Clara for a while?"
Celia said the arrangement would need Adrian's agreement and attention to parental authority. Olivia called her father herself.
"I want to stay with them."
"Okay," Adrian said quietly.
She had expected an argument. His answer made her cry.

Then Priya called him again.
"Adrian, one of the transfers went into an account in your daughter's name."
