Chapter 16 - The Price of Silence

Adrian read Vanessa's proposal twice. She wanted him to withdraw his statements, describe the stroller video as misleading, and support a claim that Clara had been mentally unfit to care for Emma.
In exchange, Vanessa promised to identify hidden accounts and help recover part of the missing money.
"She still thinks I can be bought with peace," Adrian told his lawyer.
"Then don't respond emotionally. We'll give this to investigators."
They did. Adrian signed no statement and offered no private deal.
Vanessa called him from another number that evening. He answered before he recognized her voice.
"You can't let them put me in prison," she said.
"You nearly killed Emma."
"I never meant for her to fall. Clara was supposed to catch her."
"You gambled with a baby because you wanted to win an argument."
"I kept this family together when Nora died. I raised your daughter while you buried yourself in work."
"Olivia was a child. You made her think her mother left a debt."
"I did what I had to do."
Adrian felt the familiar pull of obligation. For years, Vanessa had turned every memory of helping him into a bill he owed.
"No," he said. "You did what you chose."
He ended the call and informed his attorney. He made no secret recording and no promises.
That afternoon financial investigators froze several disputed accounts through court orders. Evan was taken into custody after the evidence from Daphne and the company archive supported charges tied to the false invoices.
Vanessa's lawyer announced she would contest all allegations. Ruiz also linked the anonymous threats and study login to accounts and access credentials Evan had controlled.
Then Priya found one last outgoing transfer request, scheduled to process when the board's temporary controls expired.
