Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Offer

Vanessa wanted immunity.
She was not getting it.
But she wanted a deal.
She turned over emails.
Passwords.
Bank statements.
Audio recordings of Thomas.
Enough to expose him.
Not enough to erase her.
She admitted forging my signatures.
Admitted staging the guardianship evidence.
Admitted sedating Daniel’s tea.
That confession nearly broke me.
Daniel sat in the interview room.
“Why?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because you started waking up.”
He laughed once.
“No. Why any of it?”
Her face hardened.
“My mother lost everything when I was seventeen.”
“So?”
“So I learned what happens when you depend on people.”
I stared through the glass.
She had built an entire philosophy around fear.
Own first.
Control first.
Leave no one with the power to hurt you.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did you ever love me?”
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.”
I believed her.
That was the worst part.
People can love you and still choose terrible things.
She continued.
“I thought if I secured enough, we’d be safe.”
“You stole from my mother.”
“I was protecting us.”
“No.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“You were protecting yourself from ever having to trust anyone.”
Vanessa looked away.
Then she gave police one last piece.
Thomas had a second set of records.
Not digital.
Paper.
Kept inside the mansion.
“Where?”
She looked at Daniel.
“Behind the portrait in your father’s study.”
Daniel went still.
There was no portrait in Henry’s study anymore.
Vanessa had removed it three months earlier.
I remembered asking where it went.
She told me it was being restored.
It had not been restored.
May you like
It had been hidden.
And Thomas knew where.
