Chapter 3 - What Henry Left Behind

Thomas Bell had helped my husband build Carter Development from nothing.

He also disappeared from our lives two years after Henry died.

I thought grief had made him uncomfortable.

Evelyn said otherwise.

“Thomas never left the company.”

“What?”

“He moved behind it.”

Henry had placed several properties into a trust.

The mansion.

Two apartment buildings.

A warehouse.

A small commercial strip.

Not glamorous.

But valuable.

The trust was supposed to support me for life.

Then pass to Daniel.

Vanessa discovered it after marrying him.

According to the documents, she had spent nearly a year trying to move assets out of the trust.

Thomas helped her.

“Why?”

Evelyn handed me a bank statement.

Payments from Vanessa’s consulting company to Bell Holdings.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Then another.

A loan secured against one of the apartment buildings.

I stared.

“They borrowed against property they didn’t own?”

“They claimed control.”

“How?”

“Your supposed incapacity.”

The fake medical file.

The forged transfer.

The signature.

My knees felt weak.

Evelyn poured water.

I did not drink.

“Does Daniel know all this?”

“Enough.”

“Why did he send me away like that?”

Evelyn leaned back.

“Because last night Vanessa had a private investigator watching the house.”

I stared.

“Watching me?”

“Watching him.”

Daniel had found hidden cameras in his office.

Vanessa had access to his email.

His phone backup.

His study safe.

If he warned me openly, she would know.

So he made her believe she had won.

He humiliated me on purpose.

The thought should have made me angry.

Instead, I remembered his eyes.

Cold face.

Terrified eyes.

Then Evelyn said:

“There’s one more reason he needed you out.”

“What?”

She reached into the folder.

A copy of a life-insurance policy.

On Daniel.

Ten million dollars.

Primary beneficiary:

Vanessa Carter.

The policy had been changed six weeks earlier.

Daniel’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Evelyn tapped it once.

“He says he never signed this either.”
