Chapter 7 - The Safe

Daniel did not go home.

That was the first smart decision he made without arguing.

Vanessa called six times.

Then stopped.

Evelyn’s forensic accountant traced the shell companies.

There were four.

Thomas controlled two.

Vanessa controlled one.

The fourth belonged to someone named Elaine Pierce.

I had never heard the name.

Daniel had.

“Her mother.”

Vanessa always told us her mother died when she was young.

That was not true.

Elaine Pierce was alive.

And she had a history.

Two civil fraud cases.

One bankruptcy.

One elder-financial-abuse investigation that ended when the victim died.

I felt cold.

“This is what they do.”

Daniel looked sick.

Evelyn nodded.

“Looks like a pattern.”

Vanessa had not invented this around us.

She had learned it.

Maybe inherited it.

That did not excuse anything.

It made it worse.

Then the forensic accountant found a transfer from one of our trust properties to Elaine’s company eighteen months earlier.

Before I ever moved into the mansion.

Before Vanessa started calling me “Mom.”

The amount:

$600,000.

Daniel stared.

“How did I miss that?”

“Because you weren’t looking.”

He flinched.

I hated seeing it.

But truth that never hurts is usually too shallow.

Then a new message arrived.

From an unknown number.

Rose, your son is lying to you.

Photo attached.

Daniel signing something at a bank.

Vanessa wanted me suspicious of him.

I studied the image.

Date visible in the corner.

Two years earlier.

Daniel looked at it.

“That was Dad’s warehouse refinance.”

Not connected.

But cropped carefully.

Context removed.

The same trick she used with my guardianship photographs.

Then another message:

Ask him why he changed Henry’s trust.

I looked at my son.

He went still.

“Daniel?”

He whispered:

May you like

“I did change one thing.”

My stomach dropped.
