Chapter 13 - The Guardianship Hearing

Vanessa’s guardianship petition had not disappeared just because she was under investigation.
Paperwork has momentum.
Evelyn insisted we attend the hearing.
I hated that.
I wanted the petition thrown away.
Instead, I had to sit in court while Vanessa’s attorney described me as confused.
Forgetful.
Dependent.
My rain-soaked photograph appeared on a screen.
I looked small.
Old.
Defeated.
Then Evelyn stood.
She asked me simple questions.
My address.
Bank accounts.
Property history.
Medication.
Then:
“Mrs. Carter, do you know why you left your son’s mansion that night?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he told me to.”
“Did he truly want you gone?”
I looked at Daniel.
“No.”
“Then why did he do it?”
“To protect evidence from his wife.”
The courtroom shifted.
Evelyn introduced the note.
The money.
The forged documents.
The medical report from a doctor I had never met.
The judge’s expression hardened.
Vanessa’s attorney tried to withdraw the petition.
The judge refused to let the record disappear quietly.
He dismissed it with findings of likely fraud.
Then referred the materials to prosecutors.
Outside court, reporters waited.
I had never been on television.
A woman shouted:
“Mrs. Carter, do you forgive your daughter-in-law?”
I stopped.
Daniel whispered:
“You don’t have to answer.”
I did anyway.
“Forgiveness is not the same as trust.”
Then I walked away.
That sentence appeared everywhere by lunch.
Vanessa saw it from county custody.
Later, through her lawyer, she sent one message.
Rose, please don’t let Daniel hate me.
I read it twice.
May you like
Then deleted it.
That was not my burden.
