Chapter 18 - Daniel’s Guilt

Daniel moved into a modest apartment.

He could have stayed in the mansion during renovation.

He refused.

“Too many ghosts.”

I understood.

He also started therapy.

Good.

For months, he blamed himself for everything.

Marrying Vanessa.

Trusting Thomas.

Missing the forged papers.

Throwing me into the rain.

That last one stayed with him most.

One Sunday, he brought groceries to my room.

Real rice this time.

I laughed so hard he nearly dropped the bag.

Then he said:

“Mom, I need you to stop making excuses for me.”

I went quiet.

“What?”

“You always say I was protecting you.”

“You were.”

“I was also cruel.”

“Acting.”

“You didn’t know that.”

He was right.

I had stood in that rain believing my son had chosen his wife over me.

Even if it saved the case, the pain had been real.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

No explanation.

No defense.

That mattered.

I said:

“I forgive you.”

He started crying.

“But if you ever throw rice at me again, I’m calling Evelyn.”

He laughed.

We ate dinner.

Cheap takeout.

Plastic containers.

No mansion.

No staff.

Best meal I had eaten in years.

Then Daniel pulled out one last file.

Recovered from Vanessa’s laptop.

A folder labeled FUTURE.

Inside were plans.

After the trust transfer, she intended to sell the mansion.

Move Daniel to Europe.

Place me in assisted living.

Not because I needed it.

Because it would make me easier to manage.

I stared at the screen.

Then closed it.

“No more.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What?”

“I don’t need to know every ugly thing she planned.”

May you like

For the first time, I chose not ignorance.

Boundaries.
