Chapter 5 - The Man Outside

Evelyn turned off the lights.

“Stay here.”

She moved toward the security monitor.

A man in a dark raincoat stood outside.

He knocked twice.

Then once.

Evelyn exhaled.

“It’s Daniel.”

My knees nearly gave out.

She opened the door.

My son stepped inside.

He looked like he had not slept.

The second he saw me, his face broke.

“Mom.”

I slapped him.

Hard.

He did not move.

“That was for the rain.”

“I know.”

Then I hugged him.

He held me so tightly I could feel him shaking.

“I’m sorry.”

“You could have told me something.”

“I couldn’t.”

“You could have whispered.”

“She had audio in the hallway.”

I stepped back.

“What?”

Daniel pulled a tiny black device from his pocket.

A microphone.

Found beneath the entry table.

Vanessa had been recording conversations.

He had removed one.

He suspected more.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“She filed the guardianship?”

“Yes.”

“She moved faster than I expected.”

Daniel opened his laptop.

“I got the rest.”

He showed us a folder.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

A spreadsheet.

One tab was titled ROSE.

Under it:

Mansion transfer.

Medical incapacity.

Guardianship.

Public narrative.

My stomach turned.

Public narrative.

Vanessa had bullet points for how I would be described.

Forgetful.

Dependent.

Emotionally unstable.

Resentful of daughter-in-law.

Daniel whispered:

“She was building a story around you.”

“Why?”

“Because if you looked unreliable, no one would question your signatures.”

Then he clicked another tab.

DANIEL.

Insurance.

Medical.

Medication schedule.

I stared.

“What medication?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Vanessa started putting something in my nightly tea.”

The room went silent.

“How do you know?”

“I stopped drinking it.”

“What was it?”

“Sedative.”

I covered my mouth.

Daniel swallowed.

“And the week I stopped drinking it, she asked why I wasn’t sleeping as deeply anymore.”

Then Evelyn said:

“We need law enforcement now.”

Daniel nodded.

But his face stayed tense.

“Not yet.”

I stared at him.

“Why not?”

He turned the laptop.

A scheduled transaction was set for noon.

If it completed, two trust properties would be transferred to a shell company.

Owner:

Thomas Bell.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“We have three hours.”
