Chapter 8 - What Daniel Changed

Daniel had amended the trust six months after his father died.
Not secretly.
Legally.
But he never told me.
He changed the order of successor trustees.
Originally:
Me.
Then Thomas Bell.
Then Daniel.
Daniel removed Thomas and placed himself second.
“Why?”
“Dad told me before he died that he didn’t trust Thomas anymore.”
I stared.
“Henry never told me.”
“He didn’t want to worry you.”
I laughed bitterly.
Apparently the men in my family believed silence was hereditary.
Daniel continued.
“Dad thought Thomas was hiding debt.”
That changed everything.
My husband had suspected Thomas before his death.
“How did Henry die?”
Daniel looked at me.
Cancer.
Eight months.
No mystery.
No conspiracy.
Good.
I needed one thing not to become darker.
But Henry had left behind notes.
Daniel stored them in a safe-deposit box.
We went to the bank.
Inside was a yellow legal pad.
My husband’s handwriting.
Thomas pushing aggressive loans.
Thomas requesting trust authority.
Thomas upset after Daniel became successor.
Then one sentence:
If anything happens to me, Rose must never sign alone with Thomas in the room.
My knees weakened.
Henry had been trying to protect me.
He simply had not explained enough.
Again.
Protection through secrecy.
It almost cost us everything.
Then we found a sealed envelope.
For Rose.
I opened it.
Inside was a key.
No explanation.
Just an address.
2147 North Harbor Road.
Daniel frowned.
“That’s the old warehouse.”
The one my husband sold before he died.
Except when Evelyn checked county records, the warehouse had never been sold.
It had been transferred to a private holding company.
Owner hidden.
Then she looked up.
“That company still belongs to the Carter family trust.”
Vanessa had not found it.
Neither had Thomas.
May you like
We had one asset they did not know existed.
And maybe one place Henry had hidden the rest.
