Chapter 14 - Thomas Bell

Thomas lasted four days before asking for a deal.
Vanessa had given police too much.
Henry’s ledger gave them more.
The recorder finished it.
Thomas admitted diverting trust funds years earlier.
He also admitted helping Vanessa structure the later transfers.
But he blamed her for the sedatives.
She blamed him for the shell companies.
Both were partly right.
That was the ugly genius of their partnership.
Each carried enough guilt to expose the other.
Neither could tell the full truth without hurting themselves.
Then prosecutors found one more theft.
A scholarship fund.
Henry had created it for children of Carter Development employees.
Thomas siphoned from it.
That made Daniel furious in a way the mansion never had.
“Dad cared about that fund.”
I knew.
Henry had grown up poor.
He believed education was the only inheritance that multiplied.
We met one former employee whose daughter lost a scholarship after “funding problems.”
She had worked two jobs through college.
Daniel sat across from her.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked confused.
“You didn’t do it.”
“No.”
“Then don’t apologize like you did.”
Good.
Daniel needed that lesson.
So did I.
We could repair damage without pretending we caused all of it.
Daniel restored the scholarship fund using recovered trust money and some of his own.
No cameras.
No press.
No naming rights.
That mattered.
Then prosecutors told us Thomas had kept one final secret.
A beneficiary agreement.
If Daniel died before the trust dispute ended, Vanessa would receive control of several assets.
Daniel stared.
“Did she know?”
The prosecutor paused.
May you like
“Yes.”
And suddenly the sedative in his tea looked even darker.
