Chapter 15 - What Vanessa Knew

Vanessa insisted she never intended to kill Daniel.
She said the sedative was to make him sleep.
To keep him from checking the office at night.
To keep him from discovering files.
Maybe true.
Maybe not.
But the beneficiary agreement proved she knew his death would benefit her.
That changed how prosecutors viewed everything.
Daniel looked hollow.
He had loved her.
Still did, somewhere.
You do not turn off five years because a document arrives.
That is not how people work.
He asked to see her.
I told him no.
Then stopped myself.
He was an adult.
His choices were his.
He met her in a monitored room.
I waited outside.
Later he told me what happened.
Vanessa cried.
Said she never wanted him dead.
Said Thomas designed the beneficiary structure.
Said she signed without thinking.
Daniel asked:
“Did you know you would control the trust if I died?”
Long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
“Did you keep drugging my tea after you knew?”
“Yes.”
That was enough.
He stood.
Vanessa begged:
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“I loved you.”
“Loved?”
“I don’t know.”
That hurt her.
Good.
Truth is not required to be painless.
Then she said:
“Your mother ruined us.”
Daniel stopped.
“No.”
He turned back.
“You made her your target because you thought she was weak.”
Vanessa cried harder.
He continued.
“She was the only person in the house who never wanted anything from me.”
Then he left.
Outside, he sat beside me.
We said nothing.

Sometimes a mother’s job is not to fix.
It is to sit close enough that her child does not have to fall alone.
