Chapter 4 - The Hidden Folder

Daniel had found the folder by accident.

That was what Evelyn told me.

Vanessa kept a locked cabinet inside the dressing room closet.

She claimed it held jewelry appraisals.

One night, Daniel needed a spare passport.

The key was on her ring.

Inside, he found copies of my trust.

Insurance forms.

Company access codes.

And a black flash drive labeled FAMILY.

He copied everything.

Then put it back.

“He should have called police.”

“He wanted to.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

“Because Thomas Bell is still listed as trustee adviser on one of the old Carter entities.”

Thomas had legal access to certain records.

Enough to muddy everything.

Enough to make theft look like a family dispute.

Daniel wanted proof of fraud before Vanessa knew he was onto her.

Evelyn had been helping him quietly.

I stood.

“I need to see my son.”

“No.”

“He is my son.”

“And right now the safest thing you can do for him is stay away.”

I hated her for saying it.

I hated that she was probably right.

Then her phone buzzed.

She read the message.

Her face tightened.

“What?”

“Vanessa just filed something.”

“What?”

Evelyn turned her laptop toward me.

Emergency guardianship petition.

Against me.

Claiming I was confused.

Wandering.

Financially vulnerable.

Unable to manage my affairs.

I laughed.

It came out sharper than I expected.

“She threw me into the rain and now she says I’m helpless?”

“She needs a judge to believe you are.”

“Why?”

“Because your presence makes the trust transfer harder.”

The petition included photographs.

Me leaving the mansion soaked.

Carrying the sack.

Looking down.

Looking defeated.

Vanessa had staged the whole image.

She wanted evidence that Daniel had “removed” me because I was unstable.

Then Evelyn opened the attached affidavit.

Signed by Daniel.

My heart stopped.

I read the first line.

My mother has become increasingly confused and difficult to manage.

I looked at Evelyn.

“He signed this?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

May you like

Then the office door alarm sounded.

Someone was trying the handle from outside.
