Chapter 1 - THE THING IN HIS EAR

ā€œSTOP—DON’T TOUCH IT!ā€

Caleb Mercer’s scream tore through the cabin.

Mara Vale kept one hand locked against the side of Caleb’s head.

ā€œHold still.ā€

ā€œThere’s something in there!ā€

ā€œI know.ā€

The metal tweezers disappeared into his left ear.

Mara felt resistance.

Something moved away from the metal.

Her stomach turned.

ā€œCalebā€¦ā€

ā€œGet it out!ā€

She tightened the tweezers.

The thing pulled back.

For one awful second, it felt as if something inside his skull was pulling against her.

Then it gave.

Mara yanked.

A small black shape slid free.

Caleb screamed once more—and then stopped.

The storm stopped too.

No wind. No rain. No branches scraping the roof.

Nothing.

Caleb blinked.

ā€œI can hear.ā€

She was staring at the thing twisting between the tweezers.

It was thin and dark, almost wormlike, but too long for what should have fit inside a human ear. Tiny translucent fibers opened and closed along its sides like gills.

Then it turned.

Not randomly.

Toward her.

A whisper came from it.

ā€œDon’t.ā€

Mara dropped the tweezers.

The creature struck the floorboards.

The lantern went out.

Darkness swallowed the cabin.

Caleb whispered, ā€œMara?ā€

Something wet skittered under the table.

She grabbed the flashlight beside the medical kit and snapped it on.

The beam found the floor.

Nothing.

Then Caleb lifted a trembling finger.

ā€œMaraā€¦ā€

ā€œWhat?ā€

He pointed behind her.

On the wooden wall, directly above her shoulder, something black was crawling upward.

Not one thing.

Three.

May you like

And from somewhere beneath the floor came a voice that sounded exactly like her dead sister.

ā€œMara,ā€ it whispered. ā€œOpen the cellar.ā€
