Chapter 3 - WHAT EZRA HALVERSON FOUND

They did not go into the cellar.
Mara kicked the trapdoor shut while Caleb dragged the kitchen table across it.
The whispers continued underneath.
Some cried.
Some laughed.
Some used voices neither of them knew.
Caleb’s truck would not start.
Neither would Mara’s.
Their phones had no signal, and every clock had stopped at 11:17 p.m.
Mara searched the shelves for anything Halverson might have left behind.
Behind a stack of hunting magazines, she found a leather notebook swollen with age.
The first pages were ordinary notes about weather, deer tracks and repairs.
Then the entries changed.
OCTOBER 14:
Heard scratching in the north wall.
OCTOBER 18:
Something got into Ruth’s ear while she slept.
Mara turned the page.
OCTOBER 19:
She says the ringing is gone. She hears people outside even when nobody is there.
OCTOBER 23:
Ruth hears our boy Daniel.
Daniel died in 1987.
Caleb swallowed.
Mara kept reading.
OCTOBER 29:
It learns voices.
NOVEMBER 2:
It does not live in the ear. The ear is only the door.
Below that sentence Halverson had drawn a crude map.
The cabin.
The cellar.
A tunnel leading beneath the ridge.
At the end of the tunnel was a circle marked with one word.
MINE.
Caleb frowned.
“There’s no mine on county maps.”
“There used to be.”
Mara remembered stories her father told when she was young. Blackpine Ridge had been opened for silver mining in the 1920s, then abandoned after a collapse killed twenty-three men.
Officially, the shafts were sealed.
Unofficially, people still disappeared near them.
Another entry:
NOVEMBER 7:
Ruth walked into the cellar at 3:12 a.m.
I followed.
God forgive me.
Mara turned the page.
It had been torn out.
Then something fell from the notebook.
A photograph.
Ezra and Ruth stood beside the cabin.
Behind them, almost hidden among the trees, was a third figure.
A little girl.
Mara brought the photo closer.
May you like
Her breath stopped.
The girl had Lena’s face.
