Chapter 15 - BLACKPINE

They reached Blackpine just after dawn.
The town looked normal.
That was the worst part.
Mara wanted to scream at everyone to cover their ears.
Instead she took Caleb to the clinic.
Dr. Owen Park examined him.
“Infection, trauma, maybe a perforation.”
Mara stared at him.
“There was something inside.”
Park looked politely concerned.
“We’ll do imaging.”
“Listen to me.”
Caleb touched her arm.
“We need proof.”
The creature Mara crushed in the mine had burned to residue.
No sample, no photograph, no evidence.
Then Mara remembered Halverson’s notebook.
Still in her pack.
Dr. Park skimmed the pages.
His expression changed.
“You know this handwriting?”
“My grandfather treated Ruth Halverson.”
Mara leaned forward.
“What did he say?”
Park closed the notebook.
“That she had auditory hallucinations after an ear infection.”
“That’s the official story.”
“Yes.”
“What’s the unofficial one?”
He hesitated.
“My grandfather stopped practicing medicine two years after Ruth disappeared.”
“Why?”
“He went deaf.”
Caleb frowned.
“Both ears?”
Park nodded.
“Overnight.”
The room went silent.
Then a nurse entered.
“Doctor, there’s a woman asking for Mara Vale.”
Mara’s skin went cold.
“Who?”
“She says she’s your sister.”
Caleb stood.
Dr. Park looked confused.
“I thought—”
“She’s dead.”
The nurse’s face drained.
From the hallway came a woman’s laugh.
Lena.
Mara grabbed the iron instrument tray.
The clinic lights flickered.
Then every patient in the waiting room began speaking at once.
Same words.
Same rhythm.
“Mara, come outside.”
Caleb whispered, “It got here first.”
Mara looked through the glass doors.
Lena stood across the street in falling snow.
Behind her, townspeople slowly turned their heads toward the clinic.
