Chapter 7 - DOWN BELOW

They had no choice.
The cellar opened whether they wanted it to or not.
Cold air rolled upward, and the whispers stopped.
Caleb loaded the rifle.
Mara took the lantern, notebook, iron poker and a coil of rope.
âYouâre actually going down?â
âIf thereâs another way out, it may be through the old mine.â
âThat is the worst plan Iâve ever heard.â
âYour truck wonât start. Mine wonât start. Phones are dead. The cabin is filling with things that crawl into ears.â
Caleb sighed.
âFine. Second worst.â
They descended.
The cellar looked ordinary at first.
Then Mara moved a shelving unit marked on Halversonâs map.
Behind it was a narrow stone passage.
The tunnel.
Caleb shined his light inside.
Scratches covered the walls.
Warnings and names covered the walls.
RUTH.
DANIEL.
LENA.
âSomeone carved this recently.â
Caleb stared.
âWho?â
A light appeared deeper in the tunnel.
Warm.
Yellow.
Like a lantern.
Then footsteps.
An elderly man emerged.
Mara raised the poker.
He lifted both hands.
âEasy.â
Caleb whispered, âEzra?â
The man smiled tiredly.
Ezra Halverson looked twenty years older than his photograph and exactly as dead as the town records claimed he should be.
âYou bought my cabin,â he said.
Caleb could not speak.
Ezra looked at Mara.
âAnd you brought Lenaâs sister.â
Maraâs heart stopped.
âYou knew her?â
Ezraâs face collapsed.
âI tried to save her.â
âFrom what?â
He looked down the tunnel.
âFrom becoming what Ruth became.â
A woman called from far below.
âEzra?â
His eyes filled with grief.
âThatâs not my wife.â
The voice came again.
âCome home.â
Ezra whispered, âThat thing has used her voice for fifteen years.â
Mara stepped closer.
âWhat happened to Lena?â
Ezra looked at her.
âShe didnât drown.â
Maraâs breath vanished.
âWhat?â
âShe went into the water.â
May you like
He swallowed.
âBut something else came back out.â
