Chapter 12 - RUTH HALVERSON

Mara tightened the rope around Caleb and anchored it to an iron rail left by the miners.
The central mass pulsed.
With every pulse, whispers rolled across the water.
Lena stepped from behind the stone column.
Beside her came another woman.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Ruth Halverson.
Her eyes were black.
Mara understood.
They were bodies kept alive and rewritten.
Ruth spoke first.
âEzra is quiet now.â
Mara fought the urge to look back.
Lena smiled.
âYou always hated silence.â
âYouâre not my sister.â
âIâm everything your sister remembered.â
âThat isnât the same.â
Lena tilted her head.
âWhy?â
Mara had no answer.
Caleb groaned.
The black veins around his eyes deepened.
Ruth looked at him.
âHeâll be easier soon.â
Mara raised the poker.
âStay away.â
Ruth laughed.
âYou think this is an infection.â
âWhat is it?â
âSurvival.â
She pointed to the stone.
âBefore humans cut into this mountain, we had no words. No faces. No names.â
Lena touched her own chest.
âYou gave us those.â
Mara felt horror settle into something colder.
The Echoes did not merely feed on people.
They became people.
Then spread by grief.
By love.
By voices no one could resist.
Caleb whispered, âMaraâŠâ
His real voice.
âBurn it.â
Lenaâs face changed.
âDonât.â
Caleb looked at Mara.
âPlease.â
Mara searched the cavern.
Old wooden supports.
Rusting fuel cans.
Mining equipment.
And a narrow ventilation shaft marked on Halversonâs map.
A plan formed.
Dangerous.
Maybe suicidal.
She whispered to Caleb, âCan you still hear me?â
âYes.â
âThen when I say run, run.â
He laughed weakly.
âIâm tied to a rail.â
âIâll fix that.â
Ruth stepped forward.
âYou cannot kill a mountain.â
Mara picked up an old minerâs flare.
âNo.â
She struck it.
May you like
Red fire exploded in the dark.
âBut I can make it scream.â
