Chapter 8 - WHAT CAME OUT OF THE RIVER

Mara grabbed Ezraâs coat.
âYou tell me exactly what you mean.â
Ezra did not resist.
âYour sister heard the Echoes years before you did.â
âShe was nine.â
âThey donât care.â
He explained that the abandoned mine connected to underground water channels feeding the river.
The miners had disturbed something buried beneath the ridge.
A network.
The small creatures were pieces of it.
âLike nerves,â Ezra said. âThey enter through the ear, learn voices, memories, fears. Then they call to the next person.â
âLena?â
âShe was infected.â
âYouâre lying.â
âI found her three days after the river took her.â
Mara released him.
âWhere?â
âHere.â
The tunnel seemed to shrink.
Ezra continued.
âShe walked out of the lower mine soaking wet. She knew your name. Your parents. Your birthday.â
âThen she was Lena.â
âNo.â
His voice broke.
âShe didnât know pain.â
Mara frowned.
âShe cut her hand on broken glass and watched it bleed like sheâd never seen blood before. She knew memories, but she didnât understand being human.â
Caleb whispered, âAn imitation.â
Ezra nodded.
âI tried to take her to town. She attacked me when we reached sunlight.â
Mara stepped back.
âNo.â
âI locked her below. I thought I could cure her.â
âWhere is she?â
Ezra looked toward the darkness.
âStill down there.â
Maraâs entire body went cold.
The voice from the tunnel changed.
âMara.â
Lena.
Perfect.
âI waited for you.â
Mara moved forward.
Caleb caught her.
âNo.â
âThat could be her.â
âIt isnât.â
âYou donât know that.â
Ezraâs voice sharpened.
âI do.â
The lantern light flickered.
A small figure appeared at the far end of the tunnel.
A woman now.
Not a child.
She looked exactly as Lena might have looked at twenty-seven.
Same eyes.
Same dark hair.
Same crooked smile.
Mara stopped breathing.
Lena smiled.
âYou got old.â
Mara began to cry.
Caleb whispered, âMara, donât.â
Lena tilted her head.
Then she looked at Caleb.
May you like
Her smile widened.
âYou brought me a door.â
