Chapter 18 - THE RIVER

They had minutes.
Maybe less.
The creatures streamed toward drains and roadside ditches.
Mara called state emergency management. Dr. Park gave them the explanation officials would believe.
âPossible biological contamination from abandoned mine runoff.â
The reservoir intake began emergency shutdown.
But the Echoes were already in the river.
Lena stood on the bridge outside town.
She looked weak now.
Almost human.
Mara approached with an iron crowbar, Caleb behind her.
âYou should stay back.â
âNo.â
The black vein on his face had faded under the siren frequency but not disappeared.
Lena looked at him.
âYouâre still ours.â
Caleb answered, âNot enough.â
Mara faced her sister.
Or the thing carrying her.
âWhy me?â
Lena smiled sadly.
âBecause Lena loved you most.â
âWe use strong paths.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âGrief is a road. Love is a road. Memory is a road.â
Mara understood.
The Echoes did not choose random voices.
They chose the ones people would follow.
Lena looked toward the river.
âYou cannot stop us forever.â
âMaybe not.â
Mara held up Halversonâs notebook.
âBut I can stop you today.â
The final map showed an old flood-control gate upstream.
If opened fully, it would divert the river into an abandoned quarry lined with iron-rich tailings from the mine.
Iron.
The Echoes hated it.
Caleb realized the plan.
âYouâll trap them.â
âIf the gate still works.â
Lenaâs smile disappeared.
The infected townspeople behind her began standing again.
Not free.
Not entirely.
The network was reasserting itself.
Mara ran for the control station.
Lena screamed.
The crowd moved.
Caleb stayed on the bridge.
âMara, go!â
She looked back.
He raised an iron bar.
âOne Ranger movie speech and Iâm leaving you here.â
He laughed.
âGo!â
Mara reached the flood controls.
The wheel was rusted solid.
She pulled.
Nothing.
Behind her, footsteps approached.
Lena.
Mara pulled again.
The metal screamed.
The wheel moved one inch.
May you like
Then Lena whispered directly behind her.
âYou always let go.â
