Chapter 17 - THE SIGNAL

Dr. Park ran imaging on Caleb.

The scan showed branching structures near the auditory nerve.

Mara felt the room tilt.

“You said we got it out.”

Caleb stared at the screen.

“We got the body.”

Park pointed.

“These look like filaments.”

Mara thought of the central mass.

Roots.

The Echo did not need to remain whole.

A fragment could regrow.

“How do we stop it?”

Park looked helpless.

Then Caleb said, “The bell.”

Mara turned.

“What?”

“In the mine. Your locator alarm interrupted the voices.”

Specific sound frequencies.

Park understood first.

“My grandfather’s notes.”

He ran to an old storage room and returned with a box of medical journals.

One page contained handwritten frequency tests.

Certain high tones caused severe distress in Ruth.

Mara said, “Can we broadcast it?”

Park looked toward the town emergency sirens.

“Those speakers cover three miles.”

Caleb smiled weakly.

“Let’s annoy a mountain.”

They reached the emergency control room through the clinic basement and an adjoining municipal corridor.

Outside, infected residents followed.

Lena walked among them.

Calm.

Patient.

Park configured the siren system to emit the test frequency.

Mara hovered over the switch.

“What if it hurts normal people?”

“It will,” Park said. “But not like it hurts them.”

Caleb’s black vein had reached his cheek.

“Do it.”

Mara activated the system.

The sound was almost beyond hearing.

A knife-thin whine across the town.

People outside collapsed.

Some covered their ears and screamed.

Others convulsed.

Lena dropped to one knee.

Black fluid ran from her nose.

Mara wanted to stop.

Caleb grabbed her hand.

“Keep it on.”

Fifty seconds passed.

Then small dark threads began crawling from people’s ears.

The siren drove them out.

But once free, the creatures moved together.

Across snow.

Across pavement.

Toward one place.

The river.

Caleb whispered, “They’re going home.”

Mara looked at the map.

The river flowed directly toward the city reservoir thirty miles south.

If the Echoes reached it—

Blackpine would not be the end.

It would be the beginning.
