Chapter 2 - THE VOICE UNDER THE FLOOR

Mara had not heard Lenaâs voice in nine years, not since the river took her. Yet the sound beneath the floor was perfect.
âMara⊠please.â
Caleb grabbed her wrist.
âThatâs your sister?â
Mara stared at the trapdoor near the stove.
âNo.â
âBut you saidââ
âMy sister is dead.â
The voice came again.
Closer.
âPlease. Itâs dark.â
Mara forced herself to breathe.
Caleb stood too quickly and swayed.
Mara caught him.
âYouâre bleeding.â
âI donât care.â
A thin line ran from his ear.
Outside, the storm had truly stopped.
The silence was unnatural.
Caleb looked toward the window.
âWe had ninety-mile-an-hour wind thirty seconds ago.â
âI noticed.â
The voice beneath the floor changed.
Now it sounded like Caleb.
âMara, open it.â
Caleb went pale.
The real Caleb whispered, âThatâs me.â
The cellar latch lifted twice by itself.
Mara backed away.
âWhat is under this cabin?â
Caleb looked at her.
âYou know I bought the place last spring.â
âFrom who?â
âOld man Halversonâs estate.â
Mara remembered the name.
Everyone in town knew Ezra Halverson had disappeared fifteen years earlier. His cabin had remained empty until Caleb, recently divorced and eager to disappear from the world, bought it cheap.
A heavy knock came from below.
Then another.
The trapdoor jumped in its frame.
Caleb reached for the hunting rifle by the wall.
Mara stopped him.
âYou canât shoot a voice.â
âNo, but I can shoot whatever makes one.â
The knocking stopped.
Silence.
Then something spoke from inside Calebâs ear.
Not the wounded ear.
The other one.
A tiny whisper.
âSheâs lying to you.â
Caleb froze.
Mara saw his eyes change.
âWhat?â
He slowly turned toward her.
âYou heard that?â
âNo.â
His face tightened.
âIt said youâre lying.â
Mara stepped back.
âAbout what?â
Calebâs voice lowered.
âAbout Lena.â
The cellar door slammed open.
A smell like wet soil and pennies flooded the room.
May you like
And from the darkness below, dozens of whispers rose together.
âCome down.â
