Chapter 1 - THE SLAP

The slap cracked through the living room before Clara even reached the doorway.
Seven-year-old Lily hit the cream sofa sideways, one hand flying to her cheek. The old brown teddy bear she had been holding dropped onto the rug.
Vanessa stood over her in a pale silk dress, breathing hard.
"I told you to put that filthy thing away."
Lily's eyes filled instantly. "It was Mommy's."
"Your mother is gone."
Clara froze for half a second, then moved.
"Step away from her."
Vanessa spun around. "Excuse me?"
Clara crossed the room and put herself between Vanessa and the child. She had worked in Adrian Cole's home for three years, first as a housekeeper and later as the person Lily trusted when nightmares woke her at two in the morning.
She had never spoken to Vanessa that way.
She did not care.
"You hit her," Clara said.
Vanessa's face changed.
Not guilt. Calculation.
Her eyes flicked toward the hall, then toward the front windows. Adrian was due home any minute.
"You should have stayed in the kitchen," Vanessa whispered.
Then she grabbed the crystal vase from the side table and smashed it onto the marble floor.
Lily screamed.
Clara stared at the glittering pieces.
Vanessa immediately backed away and clutched her own wrist.
"What are you doing?" Clara asked.
The front door opened.
"I'm home," Adrian called.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears so quickly it was almost impressive.
She pointed at Clara.
"Adrian!"
He rushed into the room and stopped.
Broken crystal covered the floor. Lily was crying. Vanessa was trembling. Clara stood in the middle of all of it.
"What happened?" Adrian demanded.
Vanessa pressed a hand to her chest. "Clara attacked me. Lily tried to stop her. She nearly hit your daughter with the vase."
Clara felt the room tilt.
"That is a lie."
"She hates me," Vanessa sobbed. "She has been turning Lily against me for months."
Adrian looked at Clara, confused and angry.
"Clara?"
"Ask Lily."
Vanessa snapped, "Don't drag a child into this."
Lily slowly stood.
Her cheek was red. Her small hands shook.
Adrian saw the mark.
"Lily," he said softly. "Who hit you?"
Vanessa moved first. "Sweetheart, you don't have to answer while you're upset."
Lily looked at the teddy bear on the rug.
Then she looked at her father.
"The camera saw everything."
Nobody spoke.
May you like
Adrian's head turned toward the black security camera in the corner of the ceiling.
Vanessa stopped crying.
