Chapter 14 - THE BREAK-IN

Clara pushed Lily into the bathroom and locked the inner door.
"Stay behind the tub. Do not come out unless you hear my voice and your dad's together."
"Clara-"
"Go."
The bedroom handle jerked again.
Then stopped.
Clara grabbed the heavy lamp from the nightstand but did not approach the door.
Marcus had trained the household staff on one rule during intrusions: do not go looking for danger.
Let danger come to locked doors while security closes around it.
A crash sounded downstairs.
Then shouting.
Two minutes later, Adrian's voice came through the intercom.
"Clara, stay locked in. Security has one person. Police are coming."
Lily started crying from behind the bathroom door.
Clara sat on the floor outside it.
"I'm right here."
The intruder was Vanessa's younger brother, Evan.
He had entered using an old contractor code Rachel never deleted.
Security caught him in Elena's study with a backpack full of documents and the blue box.
He also carried a small bottle of lighter fluid.
Adrian stared at it after police placed it in an evidence bag.
"He was going to burn the room."
Evan claimed Vanessa knew nothing.
Nobody believed him.
His phone said otherwise.
A message sent thirty minutes before the break-in read:
FIND THE ORIGINAL AMENDMENT. IF YOU CAN'T TAKE IT, DESTROY IT.
The sender was saved under a single letter: V.
Wexler arrived at the police station before sunrise.
By breakfast, Vanessa's lawyers were claiming the message could have been spoofed.
By lunch, forensic investigators confirmed it came from a prepaid phone purchased with cash.
The store camera showed Vanessa buying it.
The case stopped being a private scandal.
Police added conspiracy, attempted evidence destruction, and financial crimes to the investigation.
Still, Clara did not feel relief.
She packed a suitcase.
Adrian found it on her bed.
"What are you doing?"
"Leaving."
"No."
"You don't get to say no."
He stopped.
Clara zipped the bag.
"This house has turned me into evidence. Lily needs a therapist, stability, and a father who is fully present. She cannot keep using me as the wall between herself and every frightening thing."
Adrian's face tightened.
"She loves you."
"I love her too. That's why I can't let dependence become the same thing as safety."
From the doorway came a small voice.
May you like
"Are you leaving because of me?"
Lily stood there holding the bear.
