Chapter 19 - THE LAST THING VANESSA STOLE

Investigators searched Vanessa's apartment again.
Behind a loose panel in her closet, they found a velvet pouch.
Inside was a small silver locket.
Adrian recognized it instantly.
Elena had worn it almost every day during the last year of her life.
Inside the locket were two tiny photographs: Lily as a baby and Adrian asleep in a hospital chair.
It had disappeared after Elena's funeral.
Adrian had assumed it was lost.
Vanessa had it.
"How?" Clara asked.
The answer came from Rachel.
Facing charges of her own, she began cooperating.
Rachel admitted Vanessa had visited the Cole house years earlier through a charity event, long before she officially met Adrian at a business dinner.
She had known who he was.
She had researched Elena's family.
She had learned about the trust.
The romance that Adrian thought began by chance had been engineered.
Lily did not need to hear every detail.
But she asked to see the locket.
Officer Ruiz brought it in an evidence envelope before it was returned.
Lily stared through the plastic.
"She touched Mommy's things before she even knew me."
Clara nodded.
"Yes."
Lily's face tightened.
For a moment Clara thought she might cry.
Instead, Lily said, "I don't want Vanessa to say sorry to me."
"You don't have to hear it."
"What if everyone says forgiveness makes me good?"
Clara chose her words carefully.
"Forgiveness is not a ticket someone earns because they hurt you. You can heal without giving them access to you."
At the preliminary hearing, Vanessa entered in a plain navy suit.
She looked smaller without the house, the ring, the staff, and the certainty that other people would protect her.
Clara testified only about what she witnessed.
Adrian testified about the false documents and financial access.
The full security video played in court.
Vanessa watched herself slap Lily, smash the vase, and point at Clara.
For once, she could not edit the ending.
The judge ordered her to have no contact with Lily while the case moved forward.
Outside court, reporters shouted questions.
Adrian walked past them.
Clara did too.
At home, Lily waited with Dr. Maya.
She held Mr. Buttons in one hand.
In the other, she held a needle and tan thread.
"Can you help me fix his ear?" she asked.
Clara sat beside her.
"I can show you."
May you like
Lily shook her head.
"No. I want to do the last stitch myself."
