Chapter 8 - THE EDITED CLIP

The police arrived before sunset.
Officer Ruiz interviewed Lily with a child-services specialist in the library while Adrian waited outside with Clara.
Vanessa's attorney arrived twenty minutes later.
Daniel Wexler was fifty, silver-haired, and far too calm for a man whose text had just appeared on a secret phone.
"My client will cooperate," he said. "But we strongly object to this theatrical detention."
Adrian stepped toward him.
"You asked whether she got a key from my daughter's bear."
Wexler did not blink.
"I advise many families about estate planning."
"You advise people to slap children too?"
"Careful."
Clara's phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number contained a video attachment.
She opened it.
Her own face appeared.
In the clip, Lily was crying in the kitchen while Clara grabbed both of the child's wrists.
The video ended there.
Adrian watched over her shoulder.
"What is this?"
Clara remembered the moment immediately.
"She was reaching for a hot pan."
The original scene had lasted maybe twelve seconds. Lily had slipped on spilled juice and thrown both hands toward a stove where oil was popping.
Clara had caught her wrists and pulled her back.
The edited version made it look violent.
Another message arrived.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED QUIET.
Then a third.
CHECK THE LOCAL PARENT GROUP.
Adrian opened social media.
The clip was already spreading under a post claiming a household employee had abused "a vulnerable child for months while her grieving father ignored it."
The name Clara Reyes appeared in the comments.
So did the address of Adrian's company.
Vanessa emerged from the guest suite with Wexler.
Her expression was smooth again.
"I warned you," she told Clara. "People believe what they can see."
Clara held up the phone.
"You edited this."
"Prove it."
Officer Ruiz walked into the hall.
"Actually," he said, "we may be able to."
Marcus had pulled the kitchen security archive.
The full video still existed.
Vanessa's smile faded.
Then Marcus entered behind Ruiz carrying a tablet.
"There's another problem," he said.
"Someone remotely accessed the security server ten minutes ago."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"From where?"
May you like
Marcus turned the screen around.
The login belonged to Adrian's own executive assistant.
