Chapter 16 - BEFORE THE CAMERA

Marcus reconstructed the missing twelve minutes from the home's audio system.

The security camera image had been remotely disabled, but a smart speaker in the living room still held temporary voice data.

The recording began with Vanessa speaking softly.

"Give me the bear, Lily."

"No."

"I know there's something inside it."

Lily's breathing quickened.

"It's Mommy's."

Then Vanessa said the sentence that made Adrian grip the table.

"Your mother is the reason your father can't love me properly."

Lily cried.

Vanessa continued.

"If you want your dad to be happy, you have to stop acting like she is coming back."

There was rustling.

Then Lily shouted, "Clara said I can remember Mommy forever!"

Silence.

Vanessa's voice changed.

"Of course she did. Clara wants you broken because broken children need people like her."

That was when the camera video resumed.

Vanessa entered the frame, grabbed the bear, and slapped Lily.

Clara covered her mouth.

Adrian walked out of the room.

He made it to the hallway before his knees seemed to fail. He sat on the bottom stair with both hands over his face.

Lily watched from the doorway.

"Dad?"

He lowered his hands.

"I'm sorry."

She stiffened.

Maya had warned him about apologies that ask children to comfort adults.

So he corrected himself.

"You don't have to tell me it's okay. It wasn't. I should have listened sooner, and I am going to keep listening now."

Lily came closer.

"Are you mad at me?"

"Never for telling the truth."

"Even if it makes people leave?"

Adrian looked at Clara's suitcase upstairs.

"The truth does not make good people leave. It shows us who was already willing to hurt us."

The forensic team found one more thing in the audio cache.

A second voice, very faint, before Vanessa entered.

A man.

"Make sure she says Clara's name."

Adrian replayed it.

Clara recognized the voice first.

Daniel Wexler.

The lawyer had been inside the house that morning.

Marcus checked the gate records.

There was no entry under Wexler's name.

The driver identification belonged to a florist who had died six months earlier.
