Chapter 13 - SIX WEEKS

Officer Ruiz spread the papers across the dining table.
The plan had stages.
Stage One: isolate Lily from Clara.
Stage Two: establish behavioral instability.
Stage Three: secure educational guardianship.
Stage Four: move Lily to Briarwood Academy, a private boarding school three states away.
Stage Five was simply labeled POST-WEDDING AUTHORITY.
Adrian's hands curled into fists.
"Authority over what?"
The answer came from Rachel's laptop.
Draft emails to trust administrators asked hypothetical questions about whether a legal guardian could approve loans against future distributions for "the minor's housing and educational benefit."
The proposed housing project belonged to Vanessa's father's development company.
Clara stared at the screen.
"They were going to borrow against Lily's future to rescue his business."
Adrian looked up. "Rescue?"
His CFO joined by speakerphone.
Vanessa's father was carrying more debt than anyone knew. Two major projects had stalled. A lender was preparing foreclosure.
The wedding was not only social.
It was financial oxygen.
Lily walked into the room before anyone could stop her.
"Was Vanessa marrying Dad because of my money?"
Nobody answered fast enough.
She understood.
Her lower lip trembled.
"I thought she just didn't like me."
Adrian crossed to her.
"None of this is because of you."
"It is my money."
"It is their choice. Their greed. Their lie. Not you."
Lily looked at Clara.
"Did Mommy know people would do this?"
Clara thought of Elena's video.
"She knew people sometimes confuse loving a person with loving what they can get from them."
Lily sat down.
"I don't want the money."
Adrian's face broke.
"You don't have to decide anything about it for a long time."
That night, Lily slept in Clara's room because she refused to be alone.
At 2:07 a.m., the estate alarm went off.
Marcus's voice came over the intercom.
"Everybody stay where you are."
Clara sat up.
Lily grabbed the teddy bear.
Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Not security footsteps.
Fast. Uneven.
Someone tried Lily's bedroom door.
Then another door.
Clara locked hers.
A shadow moved beneath the gap.
May you like
Lily whispered, "Is Vanessa back?"
The handle turned.
