Chapter 15 - DON'T MAKE ME YOUR SHIELD

Clara's suitcase stayed open for three days.

She did not leave immediately.

Instead, she and Adrian found Dr. Maya Bennett, a child therapist recommended by the investigator. Maya came to the house in jeans and sneakers and never once asked Lily to "be brave."

She asked what made Lily feel safe.

Lily answered, "Doors I can lock. Clara. Dad when he listens. Mr. Buttons."

Adrian looked down.

Maya asked what made her feel unsafe.

Lily answered, "When adults tell me what happened didn't happen."

That sentence changed the house.

Adrian stopped asking Lily to forgive him.

He started proving he could be trusted.

He canceled every nonessential trip. He moved his office into the downstairs study. He attended therapy sessions when invited and left when Lily wanted privacy.

Clara reduced her role slowly.

She stopped sleeping beside Lily after nightmares and sat in a chair instead. Then outside the door. Then she let Adrian sit there.

One night, Lily woke crying and called for Clara.

Clara reached the hall and stopped when she saw Adrian already sitting beside the bed.

"I'm here," he whispered.

Lily looked past him toward Clara.

Clara smiled.

"You're okay."

Lily hesitated.

Then she reached for her father's hand.

Clara quietly walked away.

The next morning, Lily found her in the kitchen.

"You left."

"Your dad had you."

"What if I wanted you?"

Clara crouched.

"Then I come when you truly need me. But I can't become the only person you think can keep you safe."

Lily frowned.

"Why?"

"Because someday you will learn that you can keep yourself safe too."

That afternoon, police called.

Vanessa had agreed to an interview.

She denied the financial plan, blamed Rachel, and claimed Evan acted alone.

Then investigators asked why her fingerprints were found on the forged guardianship petition before the document had supposedly been drafted for her review.

Vanessa ended the interview.

But before leaving, she made one statement for Adrian.

Officer Ruiz repeated it exactly.

"Tell him if he thinks the camera saved his daughter, he should watch what happened before the camera turned on."

Adrian's face changed.

Marcus immediately pulled older footage.

There was a twelve-minute gap on the day of the slap.

A gap that began just before Vanessa entered the living room.
