Chapter 4 - ELENA'S LETTER

Adrian sat at the desk because his legs would not hold him.

Lily stood beside him with the teddy bear tucked under one arm.

Clara stayed near the door.

Vanessa did not leave.

"Read it later," she said.

Adrian broke the seal.

The paper inside had yellowed slightly at the folds.

Elena's handwriting began neat, then became shakier near the bottom.

Adrian read silently at first.

Then one line made him stop breathing.

Clara watched his eyes move back to the top.

"What does it say?" Lily asked.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

"Your mom wanted me to protect something for you."

Vanessa laughed once, too sharply.

"A dying woman's old note is not a legal document."

Adrian lifted his head.

"I didn't say it was about money."

Vanessa went still.

Clara caught it.

Adrian did too.

He read aloud.

"If anything happens to me, Lily's inheritance must remain under the separate trust agreement. No future spouse of yours should ever control it, borrow against it, or use it as security. I know that sounds cold. I hope someday it sounds unnecessary."

Vanessa turned toward the hall.

Adrian kept reading.

"The flash drive contains copies of the trust documents, my personal letters to Lily, and a recording explaining why I made this arrangement."

He looked at Vanessa.

"How did you know the letter involved money?"

"I guessed."

"No."

Her mouth tightened.

"You talk about Lily's trust all the time."

"I almost never talk about it."

Clara remembered something.

Three weeks earlier, Vanessa had asked whether Elena's old belongings were insured. At the time, Clara thought she meant jewelry.

Now she understood the question differently.

Adrian inserted the flash drive into the desk computer.

A password screen appeared.

Under the box lid, Elena had written a clue:

THE FIRST THING SHE CALLED YOU.

Lily whispered, "Daddy."

Adrian typed it.

The drive opened.

There were folders labeled LETTERS, TRUST, LILY, and one named PRIVATE.

Vanessa crossed the room suddenly.

"This is enough."

Clara stepped between her and the computer.

Vanessa's composure snapped.

"Move."

"No."

Adrian opened the PRIVATE folder.

There was one video file.
