Chapter 12 - THE PRICE OF TRUST

The transfer had been authorized with Adrian's digital signature.
It was perfect.
It was also fake.
The CFO froze the account before a second transfer could clear, but the first four hundred thousand had already moved through two intermediaries.
Adrian called the bank's fraud department.
Marcus called police.
Clara watched Lily color at the far end of the library, pretending not to listen.
She heard everything anyway.
By noon, reporters were outside the estate gate.
Someone had leaked the story.
Not the full story.
Vanessa's version.
Headlines described a "bitter domestic dispute" involving a wealthy widower, his fiancee, and a "possessive household employee."
The edited kitchen clip appeared again.
Then Vanessa released a statement.
She claimed Clara manipulated Lily, Adrian suffered unresolved grief, and the accusation of child abuse was "a tragic misunderstanding weaponized by people seeking access to family money."
Clara laughed when she read the last part.
It was not amusement.
"She is accusing me of doing exactly what she did."
Adrian looked sick.
"My board wants me in an emergency meeting."
"Go."
"I'm not leaving Lily."
"Then attend by video. But don't hide from this because you're ashamed."
He looked at her.
Clara continued.
"Shame is useful only if it changes what you do next."
During the board call, one director asked Adrian whether Clara should be removed from the home "to calm the optics."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"No."
"The public sees an employee standing between you and your fiancee."
"Then the public can learn to see better."
He authorized the release of the complete kitchen video to police, not the media, and announced an independent forensic review of the household security system.
That evening, Officer Ruiz returned with news.
Rachel had been found at the airport with a one-way ticket to Montreal.
In her suitcase police discovered cash, a second laptop, and a folder labeled LILY C.
Inside were school schedules, therapy notes, photographs, and a printed timeline.
At the bottom of the timeline was a date six weeks away.
Adrian recognized it.
His wedding day.

Beside the date, Vanessa had written two words:
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
