Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO FROM THE DEAD

Elena appeared on the screen thinner than Adrian remembered.
A scarf covered her hair. Her face was pale, but her smile was unmistakably hers.
"Adrian," the recording began, "if you're watching this, I didn't get the extra time we kept pretending I had."
Lily climbed into her father's lap without asking.
Adrian wrapped both arms around her.
Vanessa stayed by the door.
Elena spoke about Lily first. Her laugh. Her stubbornness. Her habit of hiding crackers under couch cushions.
Then her tone changed.
"There is one thing I need you to understand about the trust. The money came from my father, and he tied it to Lily because he was afraid people would someday love access to her more than they loved her."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I thought he was being cynical," Elena continued. "Maybe he was. But please promise me you will never let anyone make Lily feel like she owes them for staying."
Clara looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa was staring at the floor.
The video ended with Elena holding up the same teddy bear.
"The little key is sewn into Mr. Buttons. If Lily ever needs the letters, tell her I made the ugliest stitches in America."
Lily laughed through her tears.
For one second, grief softened the room.
Then Adrian opened the TRUST folder.
The current balance made Clara blink.
It was not just an inheritance.
It was a fortune.
Several real-estate holdings, investment accounts, and shares in Elena's family's medical company sat under a protected trust structure. Adrian was a trustee, but he could not redirect the principal for himself or any future spouse.
Vanessa had once joked that Lily would be "the richest teenager in the state."
It had not sounded funny then.
It sounded much worse now.
Adrian scrolled through recent access logs.
Someone had tried to open the trust portal six times in the previous two months.
"That wasn't me," he said.
Clara leaned closer.
The failed attempts came from the IP address of the house.
Adrian turned slowly.
Vanessa's face had become expressionless.
"Give me your phone," he said.
"No."
"Give me your phone."
"You don't get to search my private life because I slapped a child."
Adrian's voice dropped.
"You tried to frame Clara for it."
Vanessa backed toward the hall.
Then Lily spoke.
"She asked me for Mommy's password."
Every adult in the room froze.
Adrian looked down at her.
"When?"
Lily hugged the bear tighter.
May you like
"Last night."
Vanessa ran.
