Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO ENTERED OUR HOME TO DESTROY ITNobody spoke.

The screen remained black.

But Emily’s final words were still echoing inside Richard’s mind.

“If Vanessa ever gets close to Sophie
 run.”

Richard stared at the photograph in his hand.

Vanessa.

Standing beside Emily.

Years before Richard ever knew her.

Years before the engagement.

Years before she claimed she wanted to become part of their family.

The woman who had kissed him goodnight.

The woman who had cooked dinner for his daughter.

The woman who told him:

“I love Sophie like she’s my own.”

Had known Emily.

Had a connection to the secrets that destroyed his family.

Richard slowly looked toward the basement stairs.

“She was never here by accident.”

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard him.

Jonathan looked at the screen.

“No.”

Richard turned.

“What?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

Richard stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa wasn’t supposed to be involved.”

A strange silence followed.

Richard noticed immediately.

“You knew about her.”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

Richard stepped closer.

“You knew who Vanessa was before I met her.”

Jonathan looked away.

That was enough.

Richard’s anger returned.

“Everyone knew except me.”

Eleanor looked down.

Jonathan stayed silent.

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Unbelievable.”

“I spent years protecting people who were lying to me.”

He pointed toward the hidden room.

“My wife.”

“My brother.”

“My family.”

“And all of you knew something.”

Eleanor finally spoke.

“Richard
”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I don’t want another excuse.”

His voice cracked.

“I want the truth.”

Nobody answered.

Then Sophie spoke.

“Daddy?”

Richard immediately turned.

His anger disappeared.

Because she was still just a little girl.

A child who had been dragged into an adult war.

He knelt beside her.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Is Vanessa my mommy’s enemy?”

Richard froze.

The question hurt more than anything else.

Because Sophie understood more than she should.

He gently held her hands.

“I don’t know yet.”

Sophie looked down.

“But she was mean to me.”

Richard swallowed.

“Yes.”

“She was.”

A tear slipped down Sophie’s face.

“Did she hate me?”

Richard pulled her into his arms.

“No.”

He paused.

“She was wrong.”

“But you
”

He held her tighter.

“You are loved.”

“Always.”

Behind him, Jonathan looked away.

For a moment, Richard saw something unexpected.

Regret.

But it disappeared quickly.

Then the hidden room computer made a sound.

Everyone turned.

Another file had appeared.

A new message.

ACCESS GRANTED — SECOND MEMORY

Richard walked toward the screen.

“Another video?”

Eleanor looked nervous.

“Emily created layers.”

Richard glanced at her.

“You knew?”

Eleanor sighed.

“She never trusted technology alone.”

“Because she knew people could steal files.”

Jonathan stared at her.

“You helped her.”

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Richard looked between them.

“You both worked with Emily.”

A pause.

“Then what happened?”

Nobody responded.

Richard clicked the file.

The screen turned on.

Emily appeared again.

But this time she wasn’t alone.

She was sitting at a table.

Across from her was Vanessa.

Richard’s entire body went still.

The video was dated six years earlier.

Two years before Richard met Vanessa.

Emily looked exhausted.

Vanessa looked younger.

But it was definitely her.

Emily spoke first.

“You need to understand something.”

Vanessa looked nervous.

“What?”

“If you go through with this
”

Emily paused.

“You will destroy an innocent child’s life.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I don’t have a choice.”

Richard’s face changed.

The same words.

Again.

“I don’t have a choice.”

Emily leaned forward.

“You always have a choice.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

“My father will destroy everyone I love.”

The room went silent.

Richard stared at the screen.

Her father.

Jonathan looked shocked.

“Her father?”

The video continued.

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“Then tell Richard the truth.”

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he will hate me.”

Emily’s expression softened.

“Richard is not like them.”

Vanessa laughed sadly.

“He will never forgive me.”

The video stopped for a second.

Then Emily said:

“What happens if Sophie is involved?”

Vanessa looked terrified.

The screen froze.

Richard stared.

Sophie.

Even then.

Emily knew Sophie was in danger.

The video continued.

Vanessa whispered:

“I’m supposed to get close to him.”

Richard felt cold.

“For what?” Emily asked.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“To find where he hid the documents.”

Silence.

Richard stepped away from the screen.

The truth hit him.

Vanessa had entered his life as a mission.

Not love.

Not coincidence.

A mission.

The video continued.

Emily asked:

“And after you find them?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Emily stared at her.

“What happens to Sophie?”

A long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“They said they would take care of it.”

Richard’s breathing stopped.

Take care of it.

Those words could mean anything.

But everyone in that room understood.

Emily looked devastated.

“Vanessa
”

“You are helping people who want to hurt a child.”

Vanessa covered her face.

“I know.”

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Richard stared at the blank screen.

Then slowly turned toward Eleanor.

“Where is Vanessa now?”

Eleanor looked surprised.

“I don’t know.”

Jonathan suddenly spoke.

“She ran.”

Richard looked at him.

“When?”

“After you found the cameras.”

Richard frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Jonathan looked away.

“Because I thought I could handle it.”

Richard laughed coldly.

“You thought you could handle everything.”

Jonathan didn’t respond.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Richard answered.

“Hello?”

No voice.

Only breathing.

Then a woman whispered:

“Richard.”

His face changed.

Vanessa.

“Where is Sophie?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I’m trying to save her.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You hurt her.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You used me.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

Richard said nothing.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“But I never wanted them to take her.”

Richard tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who are they?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone in the basement freeze.

“The same people who killed Emily.”

Richard stopped breathing.

“Where are you?”

Another pause.

“I’m at the place where everything started.”

“Where?”

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Your father’s old office.”

Richard frowned.

“That building was destroyed years ago.”

“No.”

Her voice became quieter.

“They wanted everyone to think it was destroyed.”

A pause.

“But the basement is still there.”

Richard looked at the hidden room.

Another basement.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Richard, you need to come alone.”

“No.”

“If you bring anyone
”

Her voice cracked.

“They will kill Sophie.”

Richard froze.

“Who has Sophie?”

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

Then answered:

“Your father’s last partner.”

Richard’s face changed.

“Who?”

The call became distorted.

But before it disconnected, Vanessa said one name.

A name Richard had never heard before.

But Jonathan immediately recognized.

And the fear on his face told Richard everything.

“Marcus Vale.”

The call ended.

The basement became silent.

Richard looked at Jonathan.

“Who is Marcus Vale?”

Jonathan didn’t answer immediately.

Then he whispered:

“The man who taught my father how to destroy people.”

A pause.

“And the man who taught Vanessa everything she knows.”

Richard looked toward Sophie.

His daughter.

The child everyone wanted.

The child everyone was fighting over.

And for the first time...

Richard understood.

The enemy was not one person.

It was an entire system.

A system that had been waiting years for Sophie to become old enough to control.

Then the hidden computer screen turned on again.

One final message appeared.

SOPHIE IS THE KEY.

THE CLOCK HAS STARTED.

Richard stared at the words.

Because beneath them was a countdown.

04:59:59

Four hours.

Four hours until something happened.

And Richard knew one thing.

May you like

Whatever they planned...

He had only four hours to save his daughter.
