Chapter 9 - THE INHERITANCE NOBODY KNEW ABOUTRichard couldn’t move.

The letter remained open in his hands.

The words stared back at him.

Sophie is not just my granddaughter.

She is the legal owner of everything I built.

For years, Richard believed his father’s empire belonged to him.

The companies.

The properties.

The investments.

The family name.

But now he discovered something impossible.

It had never been his.

Not completely.

It belonged to Sophie.

His six-year-old daughter.

The little girl who was sitting behind him holding a stuffed rabbit.

The little girl Vanessa tried to break.

The little girl Jonathan kidnapped.

The little girl everyone suddenly cared about.

Not because they loved her.

Because of what she represented.

Richard slowly lowered the letter.

“No.”

The word escaped his mouth.

Jonathan watched him carefully.

“You finally understand.”

Richard looked at him.

“You knew.”

Jonathan smiled.

“I knew pieces.”

“Enough to know Sophie was important.”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“That’s why you took her.”

Jonathan didn’t deny it.

“I needed answers.”

“You terrified a child for answers?”

Jonathan looked away.

“You think I wanted to hurt her?”

Richard stepped forward.

“You locked my daughter in a basement.”

“I kept her alive.”

Richard stared.

“What?”

Jonathan’s expression became serious.

“You have no idea how many people are looking for her.”

The room went silent.

Richard frowned.

“What people?”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

That bothered Richard more than anything.

Because Jonathan was no longer acting like a villain.

He was acting like someone who knew they were running out of time.

“Tell me.”

Jonathan looked toward the old house.

“Your father created something bigger than a company.”

Richard said nothing.

“He built a network.”

“A system.”

“People who controlled money, information, and decisions.”

Richard shook his head.

“My father was a businessman.”

Jonathan laughed quietly.

“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.”

Richard remembered all the secrets.

The hidden basement.

The documents.

The cameras.

The lies.

“What was the network called?”

Jonathan hesitated.

Then said one word.

“The Circle.”

A cold feeling moved through Richard.

“The Circle?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Your father was one of five founders.”

Richard stared.

“And Sophie inherited it?”

“No.”

Jonathan looked at the letter.

“She inherited the evidence.”

Richard frowned.

“What evidence?”

Jonathan pointed toward the box.

“Everything your father collected.”

“Every transaction.”

“Every secret deal.”

“Every person who was involved.”

Richard looked at the documents.

His stomach tightened.

“Why would he leave that to Sophie?”

Jonathan smiled sadly.

“Because he knew adults would fight over power.”

“He knew people like me would destroy each other trying to control it.”

“But nobody would suspect a little girl.”

Richard looked at Sophie.

His daughter was watching him quietly.

She didn’t understand the world collapsing around her.

She only understood that her father was upset.

Richard walked back to her.

He knelt down.

“Sophie.”

She looked at him.

“Yes, Daddy?”

“Are you scared?”

She thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

“A little.”

Richard swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Sophie touched his face.

“Are you leaving me?”

The question broke him.

“No.”

He held her hands.

“Never.”

“I promise.”

Behind them, Jonathan watched silently.

For a moment...

Richard saw something unexpected.

Regret.

But it disappeared quickly.

A sound suddenly interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Not Richard’s.

Jonathan’s.

Jonathan looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

Richard noticed.

“Who is it?”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

“What?”

Silence.

Then Jonathan’s face became pale.

“No.”

A pause.

“That’s impossible.”

Richard stepped closer.

“What happened?”

Jonathan ended the call.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“They found us.”

Richard immediately became alert.

“Who?”

Jonathan looked toward Sophie.

“The people who want the inheritance.”

A loud sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

Richard moved in front of Sophie.

Jonathan reached inside his jacket.

Richard immediately reacted.

“Don’t.”

Jonathan stopped.

“I’m not going to hurt you.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Trying to keep you alive.”

Footsteps moved through the hallway above them.

Slow.

Controlled.

Not rushed.

Someone wasn’t searching.

Someone knew exactly where they were going.

Richard looked toward the basement stairs.

“How did they get inside?”

Jonathan whispered:

“Because someone let them in.”

Richard turned.

“Who?”

Jonathan looked at the open basement door.

Then at Richard.

“Someone close to you.”

Richard’s mind raced.

Vanessa.

But she was not here.

Then another possibility appeared.

Someone else.

Someone who knew the house.

Someone who knew the family.

The footsteps stopped.

Right outside the basement.

Nobody breathed.

Then a voice came from above.

“Richard.”

His blood turned cold.

Because he knew that voice.

It wasn’t Jonathan.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was someone he trusted.

Someone who had comforted him.

Someone who had claimed to be on his side.

Richard whispered:

“No
”

The person slowly appeared at the top of the stairs.

And Richard’s entire world collapsed.

Because standing there was...

His mother’s closest friend.

The woman who had helped raise him after Emily died.

The woman Sophie called “Aunt.”

Eleanor Whitmore.

She smiled sadly.

“I was hoping you would find the box before I had to come looking for it.”

Richard stared.

“You?”

Eleanor sighed.

“I’m sorry, Richard.”

Jonathan stepped back.

Because even he looked surprised.

Eleanor walked down the stairs.

Her eyes moved toward Sophie.

Then toward the box.

“I spent fifteen years waiting for this moment.”

Richard’s voice was full of disbelief.

“You betrayed Emily.”

Eleanor looked away.

“I didn’t betray her.”

“Then why are you here?”

She looked directly at him.

“To finish what she started.”

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor reached into her bag.

She pulled out a document.

A legal document.

Then placed it on the table.

Richard looked down.

And his face changed.

Because the document was not about the inheritance.

It was about Sophie.

A guardianship agreement.

Naming Eleanor as Sophie’s legal guardian.

Signed years ago.

Before Emily died.

Richard’s hands began shaking.

“That’s impossible.”

Eleanor smiled.

“No.”

“It was always the plan.”

Richard looked at her.

“What plan?”

Eleanor’s expression turned cold.

“The plan to make sure Sophie never belonged to you.”

Silence.

Then Sophie grabbed Richard’s hand.

“Daddy
”

Richard looked down.

“Yes?”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“I know her.”

Richard looked confused.

“What?”

Sophie stared at Eleanor.

“She came to Mommy’s room before.”

Richard froze.

“When?”

Sophie’s face became pale.

“The night Mommy disappeared.”

The basement went silent.

Richard looked at Eleanor.

Because suddenly one impossible question became the only one that mattered.

If Eleanor was there the night Emily died...

Then she knew the truth.

May you like

And maybe...

She was the reason Emily never came home.
