Chapter 2 - THE RECORDING HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEERichard couldn’t move.

He stood in the dark living room, staring at the security footage playing on his phone.

The image was grainy.

The sound was clear.

Too clear.

Three weeks earlier.

His daughter.

His home.

The woman he planned to marry.

Vanessa stood in the kitchen wearing the same soft smile she used whenever other people were watching.

But there was no smile for Sophie.

Only coldness.

Only control.

Richard watched as six-year-old Sophie sat at the kitchen table, swinging her small feet nervously beneath the chair.

She looked confused.

Scared.

Then Vanessa placed the stainless-steel dog bowl in front of her.

The same bowl Richard had found that evening.

Sophie immediately pushed it away.

“No, Vanessa.”

Her tiny voice shook.

“I don’t want to eat from that.”

Richard felt his chest tighten.

On the screen, Vanessa leaned closer.

“You don’t get to decide.”

Sophie looked toward the hallway.

“Daddy said I can eat at the table.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disgust.

“Your daddy is not here.”

A tear rolled down Sophie’s cheek.

“I want my daddy.”

Vanessa grabbed the bowl and pushed it closer.

“Then maybe you should remember who is taking care of you when he isn’t.”

Richard’s fingers tightened around the phone.

His knuckles turned white.

He wanted to smash something.

He wanted to go back three weeks and walk into that kitchen.

But he couldn’t.

All he could do was watch.

The video continued.

Sophie refused to touch the food.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Fine.”

“You can stay here until you learn.”

Sophie looked confused.

“Learn what?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Learn that nobody wants a difficult child.”

Richard’s heart stopped.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

He looked at Vanessa standing beside him.

The same woman from the video.

The same woman who had kissed him goodbye every morning.

The same woman who told him she loved Sophie.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

“Why?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Why did you do that?”

She crossed her arms.

“I told you.”

“Discipline.”

Richard stared at her.

“That’s not discipline.”

“Yes, it is.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“That was cruelty.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You’re being dramatic again.”

Richard looked back at the phone.

“Again?”

“Yes.”

“You’re always emotional when it comes to her.”

Richard froze.

Because of the way she said it.

Not because she loved Sophie.

Because she resented her.

“Her?”

Vanessa sighed.

“Richard
”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Say it.”

She looked away.

“Say what?”

“Say what you really think.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“She controls your entire life.”

Richard stared at her.

“She’s six years old.”

“And you built your whole world around her.”

“Yes.”

“I’m her father.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“I understand perfectly.”

He looked upstairs.

At the room where Sophie slept.

“You’re jealous of my daughter.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

“Then explain the video.”

Vanessa had no answer.

For the first time since he knew her...

She looked cornered.

Richard opened another recording.

This time from the hallway.

The video showed Sophie walking toward the kitchen after school.

She was holding a drawing.

A picture of Richard.

Vanessa stopped her.

“What is that?”

Sophie smiled.

“I made it for Daddy.”

Vanessa took the paper.

Looked at it.

Then ripped it in half.

Richard covered his mouth.

A wave of anger hit him.

Sophie cried.

“Why did you do that?”

Vanessa answered:

“Because your father needs to stop treating you like a baby.”

Then she walked away.

The video ended.

Richard stared at the black screen.

His daughter’s happiness.

Her trust.

Her innocence.

Vanessa had been destroying it piece by piece.

“How long?”

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?”

“How long has this been happening?”

She said nothing.

Richard stepped closer.

“Answer me.”

“A few weeks.”

“A few weeks?”

His voice rose.

“Do you expect me to believe that?”

Vanessa looked away.

Richard noticed.

That small hesitation again.

The same one from the kitchen.

“Vanessa.”

She sighed.

“Fine.”

“Months.”

Richard felt sick.

“Months?”

“She needed correction.”

“She needed a mother.”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“She needed protection from you.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Be careful.”

Richard stared.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“I’m telling you that you don’t know everything.”

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa walked toward the window.

“You think Sophie is innocent because she’s a child.”

“She is.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“You have no idea what she does when you’re not around.”

Richard laughed in disbelief.

“You’re blaming a six-year-old?”

“I’m telling you there’s another side.”

Richard looked at her.

“Show me.”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that bothered him.

Because she had always had an answer.

Always.

Then Richard noticed something.

On the security screen.

A second camera file.

One he had never opened.

The title appeared:

NURSERY — PRIVATE RECORDING

His stomach tightened.

“What is this?”

Vanessa immediately turned around.

“Don’t open that.”

Richard froze.

The speed of her reaction told him everything.

“Why?”

“It’s private.”

“It’s my house.”

“Richard.”

He ignored her.

He opened the file.

The video loaded.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Sophie was sitting on the floor playing with her dolls.

Then the nursery door opened.

Vanessa walked inside.

She looked angry.

Very angry.

Sophie immediately stopped playing.

“Vanessa?”

The woman closed the door behind her.

Richard leaned closer.

Because something about the scene felt wrong.

Vanessa knelt in front of Sophie.

And said:

“You know why your daddy loves you more than me?”

Sophie shook her head.

“Because you’re his weakness.”

Richard felt his blood run cold.

Sophie looked scared.

“I don’t want to be a weakness.”

Vanessa smiled.

“That’s why you need to help me.”

Richard stopped breathing.

Help her?

Do what?

The video continued.

Vanessa reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it in front of Sophie.

“If anyone asks
”

A pause.

“You found this.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

What was inside the envelope?

Before he could see...

The video suddenly cut off.

File unavailable.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She had already moved toward the security panel.

Her finger hovered over the power button.

“You should leave that alone.”

Richard stared at her.

“What were you trying to make my daughter do?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Then his phone suddenly received a notification.

A new security alert.

A camera had been accessed remotely.

Someone else was watching.

Richard looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

One that made his entire body go cold.

“You’re finally seeing what we’ve been hiding from you.”

Richard slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“We?”

Her face changed.

For the first time...

She looked genuinely afraid.

Because whoever sent that message...

May you like

Was not her.

And they had been watching the Sterling house long before Richard came home.
