Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE ROOMThe gunshot echoed through the underground chamber.

For a moment...

Nobody moved.

The sound disappeared.

The world slowed down.

Then Eleanor collapsed.

Her hand grabbed her shoulder.

Blood slipped between her fingers.

“SOMEBODY HELP HER!”

Richard rushed forward.

But before he could reach her, another gunshot exploded.

This time...

The bullet hit the wall beside his head.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Everyone froze.

The person holding the gun didn’t move.

Richard stared.

His heart dropped.

Because the person standing there was someone he never expected.

Someone who had been beside him from the beginning.

Someone who had acted afraid.

Someone who had pretended to help.

Vanessa.

Richard’s eyes widened.

“No...”

Vanessa stood near the entrance.

Her face was pale.

Her hand shook around the gun.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Richard...”

He looked at her like he didn’t recognize her.

“You?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Richard felt something break inside him.

After everything.

After the videos.

After the lies.

After discovering who she really was.

A part of him still hoped there was something left.

Some explanation.

Some reason.

But now...

She was holding a weapon.

And Eleanor was bleeding on the floor.

“You shot her.”

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

Richard stared.

“You pulled the trigger.”

“I was trying to stop her.”

Richard looked at Eleanor.

Then back at Vanessa.

“Stop her from what?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Jonathan moved slowly toward her.

“Put the gun down.”

Vanessa pointed the weapon at him.

“Don’t come closer.”

Jonathan stopped.

His face was filled with disappointment.

“After everything...”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Jonathan’s voice was cold.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You became exactly like him.”

Vanessa flinched.

Richard looked between them.

“Like who?”

Nobody answered.

Then the speakers turned on.

Marcus’s voice filled the room.

“Excellent.”

Everyone froze.

Richard looked toward the cameras.

“You’re watching this.”

Marcus laughed softly.

“Of course.”

“This is the most interesting part.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

Marcus sounded amused.

“People always reveal who they truly are when they are under pressure.”

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“So this was a test?”

Marcus answered:

“Everything has been a test.”

Vanessa lowered the gun slightly.

Richard noticed.

She wasn’t calm.

She wasn’t confident.

She looked trapped.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at him.

“Tell me the truth.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to help you.”

Richard almost laughed.

“By shooting Eleanor?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“By getting the document first.”

Richard frowned.

“What document?”

Vanessa looked toward the elevator.

“The final inheritance document.”

Richard tightened his grip around Sophie’s rabbit.

“The one in the vault?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Marcus needs it.”

“Why?”

“Because without it...”

She looked at him.

“He has nothing.”

Richard stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“The Circle was built on your father’s assets.”

“Your father transferred everything into a private trust.”

“And the only person who can legally activate it...”

A pause.

“Sophie.”

Richard felt cold.

“So Marcus wants control of Sophie’s inheritance.”

Vanessa nodded.

“But he can’t access it without the final document.”

Richard looked at the key.

Locker 17.

The answer was getting closer.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“Why did you hurt Sophie?”

Vanessa froze.

The question hit harder than the gun.

Richard stepped closer.

“Answer me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“My father threatened me.”

Richard shook his head.

“You made a choice.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

“I did.”

The honesty surprised him.

“I hated myself every day.”

Richard stared.

“Then why didn’t you stop?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I thought I could fix it later.”

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“I thought I could get close to Marcus, find what he wanted, and protect Sophie.”

“But I became the person I was trying to protect her from.”

Richard said nothing.

Because he wanted to hate her.

But he also saw the truth.

Vanessa was guilty.

But she wasn’t the person controlling everything.

Marcus was.

The speakers crackled again.

Marcus spoke.

“Enough emotional nonsense.”

A pause.

“Richard, you’re running out of time.”

The countdown appeared on the monitor.

00:31:45

Thirty-one minutes.

Marcus continued.

“Bring me the key.”

Richard looked at the screen.

“And if I refuse?”

Marcus smiled.

“You already know.”

The monitor changed.

A live video appeared.

Sophie.

Sitting in a room.

But this time...

Someone was standing behind her.

A man.

Older.

Holding the camera.

Richard’s blood turned cold.

Because he recognized him.

The same man from the screen.

Marcus Vale.

He was there with Sophie.

Not somewhere else.

Not watching.

Standing beside her.

Richard stepped toward the monitor.

“Sophie!”

His daughter looked up.

“Daddy!”

Her voice broke.

“Daddy, please come get me.”

Richard closed his eyes for a second.

“I’m coming, baby.”

Marcus leaned into the camera.

“You see?”

“She still believes you will save her.”

Richard looked at him.

“I will.”

Marcus smiled.

“That confidence is why your father lost.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“My father didn’t lose.”

Marcus tilted his head.

“No?”

“Then why did he die?”

Silence.

Richard felt anger rise.

“You killed him.”

Marcus smiled.

“Did I?”

A pause.

“Or did he sacrifice himself because he knew the truth would destroy everyone?”

Richard froze.

The sentence bothered him.

Because Marcus sounded certain.

Too certain.

“What truth?”

Marcus leaned closer.

“Ask Jonathan.”

Everyone turned.

Jonathan looked away.

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“What is he talking about?”

Jonathan remained silent.

“Jonathan.”

Still nothing.

Richard walked toward him.

“What truth?”

Jonathan’s face tightened.

Then he whispered:

“Your father wasn’t killed because of The Circle.”

A pause.

“He was killed because of Sophie’s mother.”

Richard froze.

“Emily?”

Jonathan nodded slowly.

“Emily found out something.”

“What?”

Jonathan looked at the countdown.

Then at Sophie’s image.

“She discovered that Sophie was never just the heir.”

Richard stared.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan swallowed.

“It means your daughter is connected to The Circle in a way nobody expected.”

The room became silent.

Even Vanessa looked confused.

Richard’s voice lowered.

“Explain.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Your father didn’t choose Sophie because she was his granddaughter.”

A pause.

“He chose her because she was the only person who could expose all of them.”

Richard felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Sophie wasn’t just the key to an inheritance.

She was the key to destroying an entire empire.

Marcus’s voice interrupted.

“Time.”

The countdown flashed.

00:20:00

Twenty minutes.

Marcus smiled.

“Find locker 17.”

“Open it.”

“Bring me the document.”

“And maybe...”

He looked at Sophie.

“I let your daughter go.”

Richard stared at the screen.

He knew Marcus was lying.

People like Marcus never gave anything freely.

But he had no choice.

He had to move.

Richard grabbed the key.

Then looked at Jonathan.

“Take me to the vault.”

Jonathan nodded.

But before they reached the elevator...

Vanessa spoke.

“Richard.”

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“If you find the document...”

A pause.

“Don’t give it to Marcus.”

Richard stared.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Because that document doesn’t just control the inheritance.”

Her voice dropped.

“It reveals who really owns The Circle.”

Richard frowned.

“Who?”

Vanessa looked at Sophie’s picture on the screen.

Then whispered:

“Your daughter.”

The elevator doors opened.

Richard stepped inside.

The countdown continued.

00:18:42

Eighteen minutes left.

One vault.

May you like

One document.

And one final truth waiting beneath the Sterling family name.
