Chapter 3 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE CAMERARichard stared at the message on his phone.

“You’re finally seeing what we’ve been hiding from you.”

For several seconds, he forgot how to breathe.

The words were simple.

But they carried a meaning he couldn’t ignore.

Someone had been watching his house.

Someone had been watching Sophie.

And someone knew exactly what Vanessa had been doing.

Richard slowly turned toward the security panel.

“Who sent this?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Her eyes were fixed on his phone.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

That was the part that bothered him the most.

Vanessa was not shocked that someone had access to their cameras.

She was shocked that Richard knew.

“Vanessa.”

His voice was low.

“Who is it?”

She looked away.

“I don’t know.”

Richard almost laughed.

Because that answer had become impossible to believe.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

“Someone hacked my security system, watched my daughter being hurt, and sent me a message
”

He stepped closer.

“And you expect me to believe you have no idea who it is?”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re looking for someone to blame.”

Richard stared at her.

“I already found someone.”

The silence between them was brutal.

For two years, Richard had believed Vanessa was the woman who would help him raise Sophie.

The woman who understood his responsibilities.

The woman who accepted that his daughter would always come first.

Now he realized he had never known her at all.

His phone buzzed again.

Another notification.

Richard looked down.

A new video file had appeared.

PRIVATE_BACKUP_CAMERA_04

His stomach tightened.

There was no camera labeled that way.

He knew every device installed in the house.

Every angle.

Every recording system.

Someone had added this.

Richard opened it.

The video showed the living room.

The date was from two months earlier.

Sophie was sitting on the couch.

She was coloring.

Then Vanessa entered.

She was holding Richard’s phone.

Richard froze.

Why did she have his phone?

On the screen, Vanessa sat beside Sophie.

“Sweetheart.”

Sophie looked up.

“Yes?”

Vanessa smiled.

A fake smile.

The same one she used around Richard’s friends.

“I need you to answer a question.”

Sophie nodded.

“Okay.”

“Do you love me?”

The little girl looked confused.

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

Sophie nodded.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Then you need to prove it.”

Richard’s face changed.

“Prove it?”

The little girl nodded nervously.

“How?”

Vanessa held up Richard’s phone.

“You need to tell your daddy that you don’t want to live with him anymore.”

Richard stopped breathing.

Vanessa on the screen continued.

“Tell him you want a new family.”

Sophie immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Daddy is my family.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t understand.”

“Yes, I do.”

Sophie hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy promised Mommy he would take care of me.”

Richard froze.

His wife’s late mother.

Sophie’s mother.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

A flash of anger crossed her face.

Then she grabbed Sophie’s arm.

Not hard enough to leave a mark.

But hard enough to make the little girl cry.

Richard immediately paused the video.

His hands were shaking.

He couldn’t watch anymore.

The room was silent.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You don’t understand what you’re seeing.”

Richard slowly looked up.

“What part should I misunderstand?”

“The part where you’re manipulating my daughter?”

“No.”

“The part where you’re trying to make her reject me?”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“She’s obsessed with you.”

Richard stared.

“She’s six.”

“She controls everything.”

“She controls nothing.”

“She controls you.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the stairs.

“She trusts me.”

“And you’re angry because she should.”

Vanessa’s eyes became cold.

“You think you’re a perfect father?”

Richard said nothing.

“You’re never home.”

The words hit harder because there was some truth behind them.

He worked long hours.

He traveled.

He tried to provide everything Sophie needed.

But he knew he had missed things.

School events.

Bedtime stories.

Small moments.

Vanessa noticed.

And she used them.

“You left her with me.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I trusted you.”

“And that was your mistake.”

The sentence slipped out.

A confession.

Small.

But real.

Richard stared at her.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa immediately looked away.

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“No.”

Richard stepped closer.

“You did.”

She became quiet.

Then Richard heard something.

A small sound from upstairs.

A door opening.

“Sophie?”

His entire body changed.

He ran.

Vanessa followed.

“Sophie!”

They reached the hallway.

Sophie was standing outside her bedroom.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

Her face was pale.

Richard immediately dropped to his knees.

“Baby.”

“Are you okay?”

Sophie looked at Vanessa.

Then at Richard.

“Daddy
”

“Yes?”

“Is Vanessa leaving?”

Richard’s heart broke.

She wasn’t asking because she was worried.

She was asking because she was hoping.

“How long have you been awake?”

Sophie looked down.

“Long enough.”

Richard gently touched her shoulder.

“Did you hear us?”

A small nod.

He pulled her into his arms.

“I’m sorry.”

Sophie whispered:

“Daddy
”

“Yes?”

“Am I the reason she’s mad?”

Richard felt tears burn his eyes.

“No.”

“Never.”

Sophie looked at him.

“She said my mommy ruined everything.”

The room went silent.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“What did you say to my daughter?”

Vanessa’s face went white.

“I was angry.”

“You talked about her mother?”

“She needed to understand.”

Richard stood slowly.

“You will never speak about her mother like that again.”

Vanessa stepped back.

“You don’t know what happened.”

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa looked toward Sophie.

Then lowered her voice.

“Ask yourself why your daughter’s mother left.”

Richard froze.

Sophie’s mother had died in a car accident years ago.

There was never a question.

At least, that was what he believed.

“What are you saying?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She turned away.

But Richard caught something.

A small smile.

Like she had just planted a seed of doubt.

That night, after Sophie finally went back to sleep, Richard sat alone in his office.

He replayed every conversation.

Every warning sign.

Every moment he ignored.

Then he opened the security system again.

He searched through every recording.

Hours passed.

Until he found something.

A camera angle he had never seen before.

The garage.

Three months earlier.

Vanessa was standing beside her car.

Talking to someone.

Richard leaned closer.

Because the person standing with her was not a stranger.

It was someone he knew.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had been around Sophie many times.

The video zoomed in.

Richard’s face turned pale.

Because the person Vanessa was talking to was...

His own brother.

Jonathan.

And the last thing Jonathan said before the video ended made Richard’s blood run cold.

“Once Richard signs the custody papers, Sophie won’t be a problem anymore.”

Richard stared at the frozen screen.

Custody papers.

His brother.

Vanessa.

His daughter.

A plan.

And suddenly Richard understood one terrifying truth.

May you like

The dog bowl was never the goal.

It was only the beginning.
