Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT SOPHIE DISAPPEAREDRichard stopped breathing.

The note shook between his fingers.
COME FIND HER.
OR YOUâLL NEVER SEE YOUR DAUGHTER AGAIN.
For a moment, the entire world went silent.
The alarm continued screaming.
The lights flashed on and off.
But Richard heard nothing except one thought repeating in his mind.
Sophie was gone.
His little girl was gone.
âNO!â
The sound that came from his mouth was not anger.
It was fear.
Pure fear.
He rushed through the bedroom.
âSophie!â
He checked under the bed.
Inside the closet.
Behind the curtains.
Every place a six-year-old child might hide.
But she wasnât there.
Her stuffed rabbit was lying on the floor.
The same rabbit she carried everywhere.
The same rabbit she refused to sleep without.
Richard picked it up.
His hands were shaking.
âDaddy is here.â
His voice cracked.
âDaddy is here, baby.â
But the room remained silent.
Vanessa appeared at the doorway.
She looked shocked.
Or at least she tried to.
âWhat happened?â
Richard turned around.
His eyes were filled with rage.
âWhere is my daughter?â
Vanessa froze.
âWhat?â
âWhere is Sophie?â
âI donât know.â
Richard stepped toward her.
âYou were in this house.â
âI was downstairs.â
âYou knew about the cameras.â
âYou knew the security system.â
âWhere is she?â
Vanessaâs face changed.
âYou think I took her?â
Richard didnât answer.
That was his answer.
Her expression turned cold.
âAfter everything I did for youâŠâ
Richard stared.
âEverything you did?â
âYes.â
âI protected this family.â
âYou terrorized my daughter.â
Vanessa shook her head.
âYou donât understand whatâs happening.â
Richard looked at the note in his hand.
âThen explain this.â
Vanessa read it.
And for the first time...
She looked truly afraid.
Not pretending.
Not acting.
Afraid.
âWhere did you get this?â
âOn Sophieâs pillow.â
Vanessa stepped backward.
âThis wasnât supposed to happen.â
Richard noticed the words.
âThis?â
He grabbed her arm.
âWhat do you mean this?â
Vanessa pulled away.
âLet go of me.â
âWho has my daughter?â
She looked at him.
Then whispered:
âJonathan.â
Richard froze.
âWhat?â
Vanessa looked away.
âI told him not to do this.â
The anger inside Richard exploded.
âYou knew?â
âNo.â
âYou knew he was planning something?â
âI knew he was angry.â
Richard stared.
âAngry?â
âHe wanted to teach you a lesson.â
Richard couldnât believe what he was hearing.
âA lesson?â
âHe took my daughter to teach me a lesson?â
Vanessa didnât answer.
Richard immediately grabbed his phone.
He called Jonathan.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then he received a message.
Unknown number.
STOP CALLING.
Richard stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
COME ALONE.
Then an address appeared.
An abandoned warehouse outside the city.
Richardâs stomach tightened.
Vanessa saw the message.
âDonât go.â
He looked at her.
âYou just said Jonathan has my daughter.â
âHe does.â
âThen Iâm going.â
âNo.â
Her voice became urgent.
âYou donât know him.â
Richard laughed bitterly.
âIâve known him my entire life.â
âNo.â
Vanessa shook her head.
âYou knew the version he wanted you to know.â
Richard stopped.
âWhat does that mean?â
Vanessa looked toward Sophieâs empty room.
Then quietly said:
âJonathan has always hated you.â
Richard frowned.
âWhy?â
âBecause your father chose you.â
The words surprised him.
âWhat?â
âYour father always saw you as the responsible one.â
âHe trusted you with the company.â
âHe gave you everything.â
Richard shook his head.
âMy father gave us both opportunities.â
Vanessa smiled sadly.
âThatâs what you believe.â
Richard looked at her.
âWhat arenât you telling me?â
Before she could answer...
The front door downstairs slammed open.
Both of them froze.
Someone entered the house.
Richard immediately moved toward the hallway.
âWhoâs there?â
No answer.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming upstairs.
Richardâs body tensed.
He moved in front of Sophieâs bedroom.
Protecting the empty room.
Protecting the memory of where his daughter had been.
A man appeared at the end of the hallway.
Not Jonathan.
Someone else.
Older.
Wearing a dark jacket.
Holding a folder.
Richard didnât recognize him.
But Vanessa did.
Her face went completely white.
âNoâŠâ
The man looked at her.
âYou failed.â
Vanessa stepped backward.
âI tried.â
âYou were supposed to control him.â
Richard looked between them.
âWhat is this?â
The man ignored him.
He looked at Vanessa.
âYou let him find the cameras.â
âYou let him see the recordings.â
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
âHe was going to find out eventually.â
The man laughed.
âNo.â
âHe was supposed to find out when we were ready.â
Richardâs blood ran cold.
âWe?â
The man finally looked at him.
âRichard Sterling.â
His voice was calm.
âYou have no idea what your daughter is worth.â
Richard stepped forward.
âWhere is Sophie?â
The man smiled.
âSafe.â
Richardâs fists tightened.
âBring her back.â
The man tilted his head.
âYou still think youâre in control.â
Richard stared.
âIâm her father.â
âAnd thatâs exactly why youâre useful.â
The man opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Legal documents.
Custody papers.
Richard recognized his own signature.
Except he had never signed them.
His face changed.
âWhat is this?â
The man smiled.
âYour future.â
Richard grabbed the papers.
His eyes moved across the page.
A temporary custody agreement.
Naming Jonathan Sterling as guardian.
A forged signature.
A plan.
His entire body went cold.
âYou were going to take my daughter.â
The man smiled.
âNot take.â
âTransfer.â
Richard looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That hurt more than he expected.
Because some part of him still wanted to believe she was only weak.
Only manipulated.
But she knew.
She knew everything.
âYou helped them.â
Vanessa whispered:
âI didnât have a choice.â
Richard laughed quietly.
âThere is always a choice.â
The man stepped closer.
âYour emotional speech is touching.â
Then he looked at the clock.
âBut youâre wasting time.â
Richardâs eyes narrowed.
âWhat happens if I donât sign?â
The man smiled.
âThen Jonathan keeps Sophie.â
Richard felt his heart stop.
âAnd if I fight?â
The man leaned closer.
âThen we show the court every mistake youâve ever made.â
A pause.
âEvery business trip.â
âEvery missed school event.â
âEvery night you werenât home.â
Richard said nothing.
Because he understood.
They werenât trying to prove he was a bad father.
They were trying to convince the world he was.
Then Richard noticed something.
The folder had a photograph attached.
A picture of Sophie.
But not a recent picture.
A picture from years ago.
Before Vanessa met her.
On the back was handwriting.
Not Jonathanâs.
Not Vanessaâs.
Someone elseâs.
Richard picked it up.
His face changed.
Because he recognized the handwriting immediately.
It belonged to Sophieâs mother.
The message said:
âRichard, if they ever try to take her from you, look beneath the place where we first promised forever.â
Richard stared at the words.
Because he knew exactly where that was.
Their old house.
The house he had sold after Sophieâs mother died.
The house everyone told him was just a painful memory.
But now he realized...
Maybe it was never just a house.
Maybe Sophieâs mother had hidden something there.
Something powerful enough to make people destroy his family.
The man saw the change in Richardâs face.
âWhat did you find?â
Richard folded the paper.
âNothing.â
The man narrowed his eyes.
But Richard was already thinking ahead.
For the first time that night...
He wasnât reacting.
He was planning.
Because whoever had taken his daughter made one mistake.
They reminded him of something.
Richard Sterling had spent his entire life protecting what belonged to him.
And now...
They had taken the one thing he would destroy everything to get back.
His daughter.
His phone buzzed again.
A new message.
A photo.
Richard opened it.
His blood froze.
It was Sophie.
Sitting in a dark room.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
And below the picture were five words:
âYour daughter remembers the basement.â
Richard stared at the screen.
Because he had never told anyone about the basement.
Not even Vanessa.
And suddenly he realized...
This wasnât only about Sophie.
May you like
Someone had been inside his familyâs secrets for years.
And they knew everything.
