Chapter 6 - THE SECRET UNDER THE OLD HOUSERichard stared at the picture on his phone.

Sophie.
Sitting alone in a dark room.
Holding her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.
Her eyes were red from crying.
But she wasnât screaming.
She wasnât panicking.
And that terrified him more.
Because Sophie had always been a brave child.
A child who smiled through fear.
A child who tried to protect other peopleâs feelings.
If she was sitting silently like that...
Someone had broken something inside her.
Richardâs hand tightened around the phone.
âWhere is she?â
The man standing in his hallway smiled.
âI told you.â
âSheâs safe.â
Richard stepped closer.
âThat is my daughter.â
His voice dropped.
âYou donât get to use the word safe.â
The man remained calm.
âCareful, Richard.â
âYouâre emotional.â
âNo.â
Richard looked directly into his eyes.
âIâm focused.â
The man tilted his head.
âFocused?â
âYes.â
âBecause you made one mistake.â
The man raised an eyebrow.
âAnd what mistake was that?â
Richard lifted his phone.
âYou sent me a picture.â
Silence.
The manâs expression changed slightly.
Only for a second.
But Richard saw it.
âYou wanted me scared.â
âYou wanted me angry.â
âYou wanted me to make a mistake.â
Richard stepped forward.
âBut you showed me something else.â
The man frowned.
âWhat?â
Richard looked at Sophieâs picture.
âThe room.â
The man said nothing.
Richard zoomed in.
The image was dark.
Almost impossible to see.
But Richard noticed something.
A small detail behind Sophie.
A wooden door.
A crack in the wall.
A symbol carved into the frame.
Richard knew that symbol.
His father used it years ago.
A family mark.
A mark that belonged to the Sterling estate.
His breathing changed.
âYouâre not outside the city.â
The manâs eyes narrowed.
âWhat?â
âYouâre in the old house.â
Nobody spoke.
Richard watched every reaction.
Vanessa looked shocked.
The man looked annoyed.
And that told him everything.
He was right.
The old Sterling house.
The house where Richard and Sophieâs mother, Emily, had lived before everything changed.
The house Richard sold after Emily died.
The house he had never entered again.
The house where Emily had written her last letter.
The house everyone told him to forget.
Richard turned toward Vanessa.
âYou knew.â
Vanessa looked away.
âRichardâŠâ
âYou knew where she was.â
âI didnât know.â
âYou recognized the room.â
Her silence was enough.
Richard felt something break inside him.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
âYou helped them take my daughter.â
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
âNo.â
âI never wanted this.â
âBut you allowed it.â
âI was trying to stop something worse.â
Richard laughed bitterly.
âBy hurting Sophie?â
Vanessaâs face changed.
âI never wanted her hurt.â
âThen why did you do it?â
She looked down.
âBecause they told me what would happen if I didnât cooperate.â
Richard stared.
âWho?â
Vanessa didnât answer.
The man behind her smiled.
âSome questions are better left unanswered.â
Richard ignored him.
âWho threatened you?â
Vanessa looked at him.
And whispered:
âYour father.â
The room went completely silent.
Richard froze.
âMy father has been dead for seven years.â
Vanessa shook her head.
âNot him.â
âHis people.â
Richard frowned.
âWhat people?â
She looked terrified.
âThe people who controlled your family before you took over.â
Richardâs mind raced.
His father had always been described as a powerful businessman.
Strict.
Demanding.
But successful.
Richard never knew about anything else.
âYouâre lying.â
Vanessa looked at him.
âI wish I was.â
The man suddenly moved.
Fast.
He grabbed Vanessaâs arm.
Richard reacted instantly.
âLet go of her.â
The man smiled.
âInteresting.â
âYou still protect her.â
Richardâs eyes hardened.
âI protect anyone who isnât hurting my daughter.â
The man released Vanessa.
Then he looked at Richard.
âYou really donât know anything.â
Richard didnât respond.
The man stepped toward the door.
âCome with me.â
Richard frowned.
âWhat?â
âYou want Sophie.â
âYes.â
âThen stop wasting time.â
Richard looked at him carefully.
âYouâre taking me to her?â
âNo.â
âIâm taking you to the truth.â
Richard almost laughed.
âI donât care about your truth.â
The man smiled.
âYou will.â
âBecause the reason your daughter was takenâŠâ
A pause.
âIs because Sophie inherited something.â
Richardâs face changed.
âWhat?â
The man looked toward the staircase.
âSomething her mother hid.â
Richard immediately thought about Emily.
The letter.
The warning.
The old house.
The basement.
His heart started racing.
âWhat did Emily leave?â
The man smiled.
âThatâs what everyone has been trying to find.â
Richard stepped closer.
âWhat is it?â
The man leaned forward.
âThe reason people are willing to destroy your family.â
A cold silence filled the hallway.
Then Richard said:
âTake me there.â
Vanessa looked at him.
âRichard, donât.â
He turned.
âWhy?â
âBecause if you go thereâŠâ
Her voice shook.
âYouâll finally know why Emily died.â
Richard froze.
The words hit harder than anything else.
Emily died in an accident.
That was the official story.
A rainy night.
A dangerous road.
A tragic loss.
But suddenly...
Richard wasnât sure anymore.
âWhat did you just say?â
Vanessa looked like she regretted speaking.
âI shouldnât have said that.â
âNo.â
Richard stepped closer.
âYou should finish.â
The man interrupted.
âWe donât have time.â
Richard looked at him.
âYou knew about Emily?â
âYes.â
âHow?â
The man smiled.
âBecause I was there.â
Richardâs body went still.
âYou were there the night she died?â
The man didnât answer.
Instead, he walked toward the front door.
âYour daughter is waiting.â
Richard followed.
But before leaving, he looked back at Vanessa.
For a moment...
He saw something different.
Not cruelty.
Not manipulation.
Fear.
Real fear.
âVanessa.â
She looked at him.
âIf Sophie is hurtâŠâ
His voice became quiet.
âI will make sure everyone responsible loses everything.â
Vanessa swallowed.
âI know.â
Richard walked outside.
The rain had started again.
A black SUV waited in the driveway.
The same kind of vehicle that had followed him earlier.
The man opened the door.
Richard got inside.
He had no idea if he was walking into a trap.
But he knew one thing.
His daughter was somewhere inside that old house.
And someone had spent years hiding the truth from him.
As the car drove away, Richard looked out the window.
The Sterling mansion disappeared behind him.
But his phone suddenly buzzed.
A new message.
From Sophieâs number.
His heart jumped.
He opened it.
Only one sentence appeared.
Daddy, I found Mommyâs room.
Richard stared.
Because Sophieâs motherâs room had been locked since the day Emily died.
And nobody...
Nobody should have been able to open it.
Then another message arrived.
A picture.
A small wooden box.
Sitting on Emilyâs old desk.
And carved into the top were four words:
FOR RICHARD ONLY.
Richard looked up.
His face turned pale.
May you like
Because the truth he had spent years avoiding...
Was waiting for him inside the house where his family was destroyed.
