Chapter 7 - THE ROOM EMILY NEVER WANTED HIM TO FINDThe old Sterling house appeared through the rain like a forgotten memory.

Richard stared through the car window.

For seven years, he had refused to come back.

Not because he hated the place.

Because he loved it too much.

Every corner carried a piece of Emily.

The woman who had changed his entire life.

The woman who gave him Sophie.

The woman he lost on a night he still couldn’t understand.

The SUV stopped in front of the old wooden gate.

The paint was peeling.

The garden was overgrown.

The house looked abandoned.

But Richard knew better.

Someone had been here recently.

The lights were on.

Someone was waiting.

The man sitting in the front seat turned around.

“Before we go inside, there’s something you need to understand.”

Richard looked at him.

“I’m done listening to warnings.”

The man ignored his anger.

“You believe Emily died because of an accident.”

Richard said nothing.

“But that’s not what happened.”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“Be careful.”

“Because if you’re lying
”

The man looked at him.

“I’m not.”

“Your wife was killed because she found something she wasn’t supposed to find.”

The words hit harder than Richard expected.

Killed.

Not died.

Killed.

Richard opened the door.

“I’m finding my daughter.”

The man nodded.

“And the truth will find you.”

Richard stepped into the rain.

The old house stood in front of him.

The same house where he and Emily had spent their happiest years.

The same house where Sophie took her first steps.

The same house where Emily sang to their daughter before bedtime.

Richard walked toward the entrance.

The door was already open.

That frightened him more than a locked door would have.

Someone wanted him to enter.

He stepped inside.

The smell hit him immediately.

Old wood.

Dust.

And something else.

Lavender.

Emily’s favorite scent.

Richard froze.

Emily always burned lavender candles in the living room.

Even after she died, he could still remember it.

“Daddy?”

His heart stopped.

A small voice.

Soft.

Weak.

“Sophie?”

Richard ran.

“Sophie!”

He followed the sound down the hallway.

Past the old family portraits.

Past the room where Emily used to paint.

Until he reached the basement door.

The same basement.

The one he had never opened after Emily’s death.

The door was slightly open.

Richard’s hand tightened around the handle.

Someone had brought Sophie down there.

Someone had opened the place Emily wanted hidden.

He pushed the door open.

The basement lights turned on automatically.

And Richard stopped.

Because the room was not empty.

Sophie was sitting on a chair in the corner.

Holding her rabbit.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy!”

Richard rushed toward her.

He dropped to his knees.

“Sophie!”

He pulled her into his arms.

She immediately wrapped herself around him.

“I knew you would come.”

Richard held her tighter.

“I’m here.”

“I’m here.”

He checked her face.

Her arms.

Her hands.

“Are you hurt?”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

“Did they hurt you?”

She looked down.

“Not here.”

Richard’s stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Sophie didn’t answer.

She just held onto him.

Richard looked around the room.

Then he noticed something.

The basement wasn’t like he remembered.

The old storage boxes were gone.

The walls had been cleaned.

Someone had turned it into a hidden office.

There were shelves.

Documents.

Photographs.

And in the center of the room...

A wooden box.

The same box Sophie had sent him a picture of.

FOR RICHARD ONLY.

Richard stood slowly.

“Sophie.”

“Yes, Daddy?”

“Who brought you here?”

The little girl looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“Uncle Jonathan.”

Richard froze.

“Jonathan?”

Sophie nodded.

“He said I needed to help him find Mommy’s secret.”

Richard’s blood ran cold.

“What secret?”

Sophie shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“He was angry because I didn’t know where it was.”

Richard looked at the box.

Then back at his daughter.

“What else did he say?”

Sophie hugged her rabbit tighter.

“He said Mommy was selfish.”

Richard felt anger rising.

“What?”

“He said Mommy hid something from everyone.”

Sophie looked scared.

“And he said you were never supposed to find out.”

Richard looked around the basement.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Jonathan wasn’t trying to take Sophie because he wanted custody.

He wanted something Emily left behind.

Something hidden in this house.

Something worth destroying a family for.

Richard walked toward the wooden box.

But before he touched it...

A voice came from behind him.

“Don’t.”

Richard turned.

Jonathan stood at the basement entrance.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

Richard immediately stepped in front of Sophie.

“Stay away from her.”

Jonathan sighed.

“Always the hero.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“I protected her.”

“You locked her in a basement.”

“I brought her somewhere safe.”

Richard laughed.

“Safe?”

Jonathan looked around.

“This house is the only place she was safe.”

Richard stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

Jonathan walked down the stairs slowly.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Jonathan looked at Sophie.

“Your father never told you about Emily.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“Don’t talk about her.”

Jonathan smiled.

“Why?”

“Because the truth hurts?”

Richard stepped forward.

“You don’t know anything about her.”

Jonathan stopped.

“I knew Emily better than you think.”

Silence.

Richard felt something was wrong.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan looked at the wooden box.

“Emily knew someone in this family would betray her.”

Richard stared.

“Who?”

Jonathan smiled.

“That’s what’s inside.”

Richard looked at the box.

Jonathan continued.

“She left a message.”

“For the person she trusted most.”

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“Me.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

Richard froze.

“Then who?”

Jonathan looked directly at Sophie.

And said:

“Your daughter.”

Richard felt cold.

“What?”

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Emily didn’t leave that box for you.”

“She left it for Sophie.”

Richard looked at his daughter.

A six-year-old child.

The person Emily trusted with a secret.

That made no sense.

Unless...

The secret was not meant to be opened now.

It was meant to be found later.

Jonathan smiled.

“And now that you’re here
”

He reached toward the box.

“We can finally see what Emily was hiding.”

Richard grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t touch it.”

Jonathan looked at him.

For the first time...

His calm expression disappeared.

Because Richard noticed something.

Fear.

Jonathan was afraid of that box.

Not curious.

Not interested.

Afraid.

Richard released his hand.

“What’s inside?”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

Then the basement lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The security system activated.

A hidden speaker crackled above them.

And a familiar voice filled the room.

Emily’s voice.

Richard froze.

Everyone froze.

A recording began.

“Richard
”

His knees almost weakened.

His dead wife was speaking to him.

“If you are hearing this
”

A pause.

“Then they finally found the room.”

Richard looked at Jonathan.

Jonathan’s face had gone completely pale.

Emily continued.

“And if Jonathan is standing there
”

The recording stopped for a second.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Richard, do not trust my brother.”

Richard’s eyes widened.

Brother?

He slowly turned toward Jonathan.

Because for years...

Jonathan Sterling had told everyone he was Richard’s only brother.

But Emily’s voice had just revealed something impossible.

Jonathan wasn’t Richard’s brother.

He was someone else.

Someone who had been hiding inside the Sterling family from the beginning.

The recording continued.

And Emily whispered:

“Because Jonathan is not who he says he is.”

The basement went silent.

And Richard finally understood.

May you like

The person who destroyed his family...

Had been living beside him all along.
